KENLY -- Anthony Brogden pitched four innings of scoreless relief Friday as Spring Creek improved to 2-4 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference with a 10-6 at North Johnston.

Brogden struck out seven, and Michael Russell had a single and a double and Jed Potter added two singles for the Gators (4-10 overall).

North Johnston is now 3-8 overall and 2-4 in Carolina 1-A play.

Spring Creek visits North Duplin in a conference matchup Tuesday night at 7.

Warriors fall at

S. Central

WINTERVILLE -- South Central remianed in a tie atop the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference on Friday night by taking a 2-0 decision over visiting Eastern Wayne.

Airlon Vincent suffered the tough-luck loss for the Warriors (7-6 overall, 6-3 ECC), despite the Falcons managing a mere three hits.

Eastern Wayne fell a full game behind South Central (11-4, 7-2) and Charles B. Aycock in the ECC standings with the loss.

The ECC has three available N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff berths.

doubleheader

FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian's Jeremy Jefferson and Billy Smith had two hits each as the Eagles defeated Northwood Temple 9-4 on Friday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Wayne Christian suffered a 3-1 loss in game two -- its first loss of the season as the Eagles left Fayetteville with a 7-1 overall mark.

Tyler Brannan had a two-RBI double in the first game, while Adam Brannan went the distance to pick up the win.

In game two, Smith posted an RBI single for the lone Wayne Christian run. Kyle Pender gave up three runs in the second inning and got the loss, while Tyler Brannan pitched two innings of scoreless relief.

The Eagles travel to Village Christian of Fayetteville on Tuesday.

Cougars battle

in losses at Fike

WILSON -- Goldsboro's Monquavis Edwards tripled home Eric McLean in the fourth inning as the Cougars turned in a solid effort in a 2-1 loss at Wilson Fike on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader.

Cedric McClary went the distance on the mound for Goldsboro in game two, yielding only four hits.

The Golden Demons won the first game 11-0 behind the pitching of Jacob Davis. Adrian Lewis tallied the loss in game two for the Cougars.

Goldsboro (0-15) travels to West Craven on Tuesday.

SWE drops

Greene Central

PINETOPS -- Despite Blake Taylor's three-hitter on the mound, Greene Central fell 4-2 in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action on Friday at SouthWest Edgecombe.

Hunter Chase had a home run for Greene Central, and Travis Rouse added a double.

The Rams continue conference play on Tuesday with a visit to Tarboro High.

N. Lenoir

LAGRANGE -- North Pitt improved to 10-6 overall by pounding out a 12-2 road win over North Lenoir in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play on Friday night.

North Pitt's Chip Wall led off the game with a home run, and Justin Tripp and Jason Vines later homered to provide the Panthers (2-1 EPC) with all the offense they would need.

Brandon Sutton's fifth-inning two-run single provided North Lenoir (11-3, 1-2) with their only scores.

The Hawks host SouthWest Edgecombe on Tuesday.

Eagles blank

Northwood

Wayne Christian's defense turned in a sterling second-half performance amid gusty wind conditions and escaped Northwood Temple 1-0 in a Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference match Friday afternoon.

Jennica Botonis, Stacey McCary, Terra Tuminia, Shelle Anderson and Lauren Williams were cited for their solid defensive efforts. Botonis preserved the shutout in goal with seven saves.

Charlie-Marie Ipock notched the game-winning goal in the 34th minute.

Wayne Christian (4-6, 3-5 CCC) entertains Village Christian of Fayetteville next Tuesday afternoon.

Warriors fall

WINTERVILLE -- Eastern Wayne managed a mere two hits Friday evening in suffering a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference softball loss at South Central.

Jessie Odom pitched all five innings for the Falcons (9-4 overall, 6-2 ECC), striking out five Warriors.

Wendey Gardner took the loss for Eastern Wayne (0-9, 0-7).

South Central visits Southern Wayne on Tuesday in conference play.

GC's Webb

throws no-hitter

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central pitcher Cassie Webb threw the first no-hitter of her varsity career and notched 15 strikeouts in a 5-0 shutout of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival SouthWest Edgecombe.

Webb walked two batters in a complete-game effort for the Rams, who climbed to 2-1 in the conference. Greene Central (4-5) entertains Tarboro next Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Casey Morris banged out two hits, including a triple, in three at-bats. Cassie Webb tripled and collected an RBI in three plate appearances. Brittany Leggett added one hit and an RBI.

The Rams had seven hits against SouthWest starter Stephanie Payne, who recorded three strikeouts to go along with five walks.

The Cougars (8-4, 0-2) have yet to score in EPC play this season after falling 1-0 to South Lenoir in nine innings on Thursday. Their four losses have been by a combined eight runs, including three 1-0 decisions.

N. Johnston batters

Spring Creek

KENLY -- North Johnston ace Candace Evans improved to 9-1 on the season by no-hitting visiting Spring Creek through the first three innings of a 12-1 Panthers victory on Friday night.

Evans struck out six for North Johnston (9-1 overall), which improved to 6-0 in Class 1-A Carolina Conference play. Evans also homered and drove in five runs.

Shanna Gooding smacked a triple for the Gators (1-9, 0-6), and Lorenda Brogden was 1-for-2.

North Johnston hosts Class 3-A C.B. Aycock on Monday night at 7.

Hawks rebound

at N. Pitt

BETHEL -- North Lenoir, coming off its first Eastern Plains 2-A regular-season defeat in three-plus seasons, used a sixth-inning uprising to turn back North Pitt 6-2 on Friday evening.

Trailing 2-1, the Hawks erupted for five runs in the sixth.

A passed ball led to the game-tying run. Senior infielder Chanee Lynch slapped a two-run home run, the first of her varsity career, to put the Hawks ahead to stay 4-2. Nicole Howard accounted for Lynch's second RBI on the momentum-swinging hit.

North Lenoir strung together four consecutive base hits against Panthers pitcher Tiphanie Shaw to keep the rally alive. Morgan Worthington drove home Leslie Oliver and Brittany Sanders plated Randi Moulton to make it 6-2.

Moulton and Worthington each finished the day 3-for-4. Sanders added two hits in four at-bats.

Worthington threw a complete-game no-hitter and recorded 12 strikeouts. The senior right-hander walked one batter and yielded two unearned runs in the first inning.

The Hawks (11-1, 2-1 EPC) travel to SouthWest Edgecombe next Tuesday afternoon.

North Pitt (8-4, 2-1) entered the contest as the lone unbeaten team in EPC play.

Collins leads

Eastern Wayne

Senior distance runner Will Collins claimed a pair of first-place finishes as Eastern Wayne swept county rivals Goldsboro and Southern Wayne in an Eastern Carolina 3-A tri-meet.

Collins prevailed in the 800 (no time) and 3,200 (10 minutes, 49 seconds) as the Warriors amassed 81 points compared to 37 for the Cougars. The Saints finished third with 30.

Eastern Wayne also got first-place wins from Corey Schley (100 and 300 hurdles), Mason Faison (100) and Michael Lawrence (1,600).

Goldsboro's Marcus Uzzell emerged the top discus thrower with a distance of 106 feet, 2 inches. Teammate Jacob Sykes edged Faison by five-hundredths of a second to win the 200. Jarrett Bryant recorded a first-place mark of 46-7 in the shot put.

Antwan Williams picked up the Saints' lone individual win in the 400 with a time of 55.03. Williams anchored Southern Wayne's meet-winning 1,600 relay. Joining him were Mario Aguilar, Michael Holland and William Boseman.

Eastern Wayne took the 800 and 1,600 relays. Goldsboro seized the 400 relay.

On the girls' side, the Warriors swept all four relays and posted 66 points in their meet. The Saints, led by Christy Dixon, finished second with 24 points. The Cougars collected 19 points.

Dixon captured the 100 and 200.

Goldsboro got individual wins from senior Morehead Scholar recipient Ashelyn James (discus) and Nickie Garner (400).

GC girls

stay unbeaten

BETHEL -- Greene Central captured first place in nine events and cruised past SouthWest Edgecombe and North Pitt in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference girls' meet.

The Rams rounded up 99 points compared to 55 for the Cougars. The host Panthers finished with 16.

Britney Belcher won the 100 and 200. Teammates Teketia May (triple jump), Diandra Tyson (400), Torre Parks (300 hurdles), Nicole Robinson (800) and Shennika King (shot put) each claimed individual wins on the Fred McNair Track.

The Rams also won the 400 and 1,600 relays.

Greene Central (4-0-1, 2-0 EPC) is the guest of SouthWest Edgecombe next Tuesday afternoon.

The Wayne Christian golf team defeated Cape Fear Christian 318-429 Friday afternoon at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Matt Davis turned in a scorecard of 72 to claim medalist honors for the Eagles (8-3, 6-0 conference).

Jonathan Greene shot 77 and Chad Smith 86.
