TARBORO -- Rosewood dominated singles play and eased past Tarboro High 6-3 in a Classes 1-A/2-A Carolina/Eastern Plains Conference men's tennis match Thursday afternoon.

Wesley Lovelady, Joey Churchwell, Ty Johnson, Brandon Hietpas and J.P. Cummins each collected straight-set victories for the Eagles. Cummins, the No. 5 seed, outlasted Kirk Heffley 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Lovelady-Hietpas claimed Rosewood's lone doubles win.

The Eagles (8-4, 7-4 C/EPC) entertain SouthWest Edgecombe next Tuesday afternoon.

CBA gets road win

VANCEBORO -- Charles B. Aycock reached the .500 mark in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play with an 8-0 road victory at West Craven on Thursday afternoon.

The teams played eight-game pro sets.

Danny Fairchild, David Williams, Blake Cooper and Corey Walker each captured identical 8-1 wins in singles. Teammates Brandon Howard and Sean Kelly triumphed by scores of 8-4 and 8-2, respectively.

Fairchild-Howard and Kelly-Williams easily dominated in doubles play.

C.B. Aycock (6-5, 4-4 ECC) entertains defending conference champion West Carteret next Tuesday afternoon.

WCDS triumphs

ROCKY MOUNT -- Alex Proimos and Luxman Srikanthra each triumphed in a third-set tiebreaker and helped Wayne Country Day nip Rocky Mount Academy 5-4 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A play Thursday afternoon.

Proimos, the No. 5 seed, split sets with Chris Cash before winning 6-2, 3-6, 11-9. Srikanthra followed the same pattern as Proimos and clipped Shaunuk Varma 6-3, 2-6, 10-4.

David Wilson claimed the other singles' win.

In doubles, Proimos-Ross Wilson and David Wilson-Byron Bryan each won by identical 8-5 scores.

Wayne Country Day (6-1) travels to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount next Monday afternoon.

Gators survive AG

LITTLEFIELD -- Short-handed Spring Creek got the job done in doubles and slipped past Ayden-Grifton 5-4 on the Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A Conference scene Thursday afternoon.

The No. 1 doubles of Cliff Wilson-Frederick Ellis cruised past the Chargers' Sam Sutton-Eric Denby 8-1. Teammates Brandon Strickland-Phat Tran, seeded No. 2, stopped A.J. Hardison-Matt Allen 8-4.

Wilson, Strickland and Ellis each won in singles.

The Gators forfeited No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Spring Creek (7-3, 7-2 C/EPC) faces North Lenoir next Tuesday afternoon at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

Ayden-Grifton fell to 0-13 overall.

Hawks cruise

BETHEL -- A trio of freshmen fared well as North Lenoir hammered North Pitt 7-2 in their Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A Conference battle Thursday afternoon.

Clinton O'dell rallied from a five-game, third-set deficit to defeat David McCram 6-3, 5-7, 7-6. Taylor Holmes and Steven Warren dueled together at No. 3 doubles and nipped the Panthers' Magale Harris-Donald Redmond 8-6.

"Today was a great day for the freshmen," Hawks coach Courtney Harrell said O'dell, Holmes and Warren.

O'dell helped the Hawks take a 4-2 lead after singles play.

Top-seeded Alex Mills, second-seeded Jared O'dell and fourth-seeded James Parker easily cruised to straight-set wins. Neither Mills nor O'dell lost a game in their respective matches.

"Alex, Jared and James continue to be very strong," said Harrell.

North Lenoir (9-3, 8-3) entertains Spring Creek next Tuesday at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

Soccer

Gudac gets hat trick

KENLY -- Jenna Gudac notched the natural hat trick (three straight goals) in North Johnston's 4-1, non-conference victory Thursday against Bunn.

Gudac, who has 20 goals this season, broke a scoreless tie in the 16th minute off an assist from senior forward Christina Strickland. Gudac tallied an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute. She finished off the hat trick in the 50th minute off an assist from Rachel Bisesi.

Heather Creech, a senior midfielder, concluded the Panthers' scoring in the 71st minute.

Bunn avoided the shutout with a goal four minutes into the second half.

Panthers goalie Allison Hinnant recorded three saves.

North Johnston (8-1-1) is the guest of Spring Creek next Monday and entertains Rosewood on Tuesday. Both contests are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs.

Bright shines for NL

LAGRANGE -- Haley Bright registered the hat trick (three goals) as North Lenoir toppled Spring Creek 9-0 in a Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A match Thursday afternoon.

Ashton Harper complemented Bright with a two-goal performance. Teammates Casey Harrison, Lindsey Walton, Gabby Hill and Katie Maloney scored one goal apiece.

Keeper Febe Barraza earned the shutout in goal.

North Lenoir (8-2, 3-1 C/EPC) is the guest of SouthWest Edgecombe next Monday at 7 p.m. Spring Creek (0-2-1, 0-2-1) plays host to North Johnston the same evening.

Baseball

Chargers dealt loss

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount Academy benefited from Wayne Country Day's graciousness on defense and rallied for a 5-4 win in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Thursday.

The Chargers erased a one-run deficit with a four-run outburst in the fourth inning. Spenser Briggs provided a two-RBI single. Kevin Herring and Sam Steed each contributed RBI singles.

But defense played a critical role.

The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, pushed across single runs in each of the final five innings. All five runs were unearned due to four Charger miscues.

Rocky Mount Academy scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

"They took advantage of our errors," said WCDS coach Michael Taylor.

Freshman right-hander Ryan Ford, who pitched with a broken left wrist, threw 6 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out one.

Seventh-grader Cameron Ford led the Chargers with two hits in three at-bats. Kevin Logan provided one hit.

Wayne Country Day (3-9, 1-5) visits Faith Christian of Rocky Mount next Monday. Game time is 4 p.m.

JV softball

Wayne Christian wins

Logan Dawson recorded two hits as Wayne Christian dismantled Community Christian of Wilson 15-7 in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Brittany Sullivan threw a no-hitter for two innings and struck out four. Ashley Thompson, Reagan Hinton and Kayla Kennedy each threw one inning for the Eagles -- now 2-0 against CCC opposition.

Wayne Christian (3-2) plays host to Fayetteville Christian on Apr. 21.

Middle schools

Norwayne soccer 3, C.B. Aycock JV 1 -- Jessica Price collected two goals and Courtney Sheeks added a single goal for the Cobras. Norwayne finished season 1-1-3 overall.

Grantham softball 4, Spring Creek 1 -- Morgan Davis scattered four hits to go along with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Taylor Reaves batted 2-for-3, including a triple. Morgan Davis added two hits, including a double. Tara Hirsch singled twice in two at-bats. Grantham (5-1) remained unbeaten in WCMSAC at 2-0. Grantham entertains Norwayne next Wednesday.

Dixie Youth Baseball

Boys Club Eagles 9, WCDS 3 -- Kevin Hanson had a grand slamfor the Eagles (3-0), while Corey Brabham picked up the win.

Boys Club Eagles 19, Grantham 3 -- Nick Bake, Jayme Van Horn and Corey Brabham had two hits each for the Boys Club. Bake had a triple and a double. Will Winslow picked up the in on the mound.

Dixie Minors

Saulston def. St. Mary's (no score) -- Tyler Huetter and Dylan Corbett each had three hits for Saulston. Jeremy Edwards provided two hits and emerged the winning pitcher.

Mar Mac Blue 18, Spring Creek 1 -- Jackson Hayes ripped a grand-slam home run and finished with five RBI. Dixie Reardon singled with two RBI and Kelsey Kornegay also singled. Mar Mac Blue plays again Sunday at Rosewood.

Dixie Majors

Wayne Country Day 7, Saulston 4 -- T.J. Ireland, Jeremy Lancaster, Nick Lancaster and Tyler Huetter had one hit apiece. Cole Davis claimed the pitching win for Wayne Country Day. Saulston is 0-1 overall.

Saulston 11, Rosewood 3 -- Jeremy Lancaster contributed two hits and T.J. Ireland provided a two-run double to spark a third-inning rally. Logan Runyon picked up the mound win, striking out eight Eagle batters. Nick Lacombe pitched the final two innings for Saulston (1-1). Josh Pipkin had two hits for Rosewood.
