Indians suffer marathon-like loss

KINSTON--The Wilmington Blue Rocks scored five runs in the top of the 12th and sent Kinston to its first defeat of the year by a final of 9-4 at historic Grainger Stadium Monday night. The win was Wilmington's second straight in extra innings as the Blue Rocks improved to 2-3, while the Tribe dropped to 3-1.

The Indians scored all their runs on three home runs, including the game-tying shot from Ryan Goleski in the bottom of the ninth. But after Juan Lara delivered 3.1 perfect innings of relief, Jim Ed Warden struggled mightily in the top of the 12th. Warden allowed all five runs in the 12th on three doubles and four walks. Zach Borowiak and Scott White each had two-run doubles for Wilmington in the inning.

Edgar Martinez (1-0) struck out four batters in 11/3 innings to earn the victory in relief for Wilmington, while Warden fell to 0-1 in his first appearance of the season. The teams combined for a whopping 30 strikeouts, including 17 by the Indians, and it marked the third time in four games Kinston hitters have struck out 10 or more times. Nathan Panther led the way offensively going 3-6 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Brad Snyder socked a two-run homer for Kinston.

The teams will square off in game two of this four-game series Tuesday in Kinston. Bear Bay (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Kinston while Luis Medoza (0-0, 0.00 ERA) gets the ball for Wilmington.
