MOC weekend preview

The Mount Olive College men's volleyball concludes its debut season, while softball wraps up conference play; and men's and women's tennis hit the road this weekend as spring sports seasons begin to wind down.

The volleyball team, a first-year varsity program, concludes its inaugural season at home Saturdayagainst Lees-McRae. Match time is 3 p.m. at College Hall.

Mount Olive (5-9) won both of its matches last weekend on its trip to Pennsylvania. The Trojans are 0-3 against Lees-McRae this season, but rallied from a two-game deficit to force a fifth game in the last meeting between the two teams in late March.

Mount Olive softball plays host to Coker (S.C.) on Saturday and Queens University of Charlotte on Sunday in a pair of NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference doubleheaders. Game time is 2 p.m. both days at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.

Mount Olive (13-26, 5-11 CVAC) is coming off a doubleheader split with Barton Wednesday. The Trojans posted one-run victories over both Coker and Queens in non-conference games last month at the Catawba College Invitational.

The men's tennis team will be in action four consecutive days as the Trojans travel to Spartanburg, S.C., today to take on USC Upstate in a crucial regional and national match-up. Mount Olive is ranked No. 39 in this week's ITA Division II national rankings, while USC Upstate is ranked No. 7. Mount Olive will also face Johnson C. Smith Monday for a non-conference match-up.

The Trojans will spend Saturday and Sunday in the Charlotte area for a pair of CVAC men's and women's tennis match-ups. Mount Olive takes on Belmont Abbey Saturday at 2 p.m., then faces Queens Sunday at 1 p.m. On the men's side, Mount Olive (10-6, 6-0 CVAC) is the lone remaining unbeaten team in conference play.

Belmont Abbey is 0-7 in the conference while Queens is 4-3.

On the women's side, Mount Olive (10-7, 4-2 CVAC) hopes to end a two-match losing skid, as well as try to position itself into a top-four or even a top-three seed for the upcoming CVAC Tournament. The Trojans are in fifth place in the CVAC standings, one game behind third-place Queens (5-1) and a half-game behind Pfeiffer (5-2), which Mount Olive defeated last Saturday.

Belmont Abbey is tied for ninth in the conference at 0-6.

The Mount Olive baseball team concludes its three-game series at Shepherd (W. Va.) College with a single game today. The Trojans return home from West Virginia tonight, then head to Laurinburg for a contest against CVAC foe St. Andrews. The game will not count towards the CVAC standings.
