Bannister, Hawks double up Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- North Lenoir's Dustin Bannister struck out seven in 61/3 innings as the Hawks defeated Spring Creek 4-2 on Wednesday at the Gators' field.

North Lenoir improved to 5-1 overall on the season, while Spring Creek fell to 3-9.

The Hawks' Brandon Sutton finished with three hits and one RBI for the Hawks, while teammate Brian Smith added two hits and drove in a run. Alex McGaughey finished with two hits.

Bannister yielded five hits and walked three. Justin Carter came on to pick up the final two outs to get the save.

Blake Thompson endured the loss for Spring Creek in one inning of relief work. Spring Creek starter and freshman Timothy Rogers went the first four innings and left the game with a 2-1 lead. Rogers gave up three hits with two strikeouts and only one earned run.

North Lenoir entertains South Lenoir in both team's Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opener on Friday. Spring Creek hosts Ayden-Grifton in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Friday.

Princeton dropped

PRINCETON -- Princeton's Josh Thompson slugged his first home run of the season in the fifth inning, but the Bulldogs suffered a 15-5 loss at home to Raleigh's Cardinal Gibbons in five innings at home on Wednesday.

The Crusaders benefited from five errors by Princeton, eventually leading to 12 unearned runs.

Brandon Pate added two hits in three plate appearances for the Bulldogs (10-2).

Dustin Myers got the loss on the mound for Princeton in 12/3 innings, yielding eight runs (three earned) on nine hits, including four doubles. Myers walked two and struck out one.

The Bulldogs look to bounce back Friday at Greenfield School in Wilson.

Rams fall

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Hunter Chase went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the Rams' 5-3 loss at home to South Central on Wednesday.

Matt Scoggin paced the Falcons offensively with two hits, including a double, while teammate Bill Hopkins picked up the win on the mound.

Travis Rouse endured the loss for Greene Central (5-4), which travels to North Pitt for its Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opener on Friday.

JV baseball

Walling no-hits GC

WINTERVILLE -- South Central's Billy Walling tossed a no-hitter with eight strikeouts as the Falcons blanked Greene Central 10-0 on Wednesday.

Walling helped his cause with two hits at the plate.

The Rams return to action on Friday at home against North Pitt.

Softball

Evans tosses no-hitter

North Johnston senior right-hander Candace Evans struck out 12 in a seven-inning, no-hit effort on Wednesday at Rosewood.

Evans (7-0), a UNC-Pembroke signee, walked four and hit one batter and finished the afternoon with her second no-hitter in as many days. She also helped her cause with three doubles at the plate. Panther teammates Amanda Pope, Michelle Fisher and Robyn Creech contributed two hits each with Creech providing two doubles and three RBI.

North Johnston improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference heading into an April 12 home game with Ayden-Grifton.

Aubrey Reinhard endured the loss for Rosewood, which travels to North Duplin on April 12.

Saints top Gators

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Lesli Darden and Lindsey Pearsall combined on a one-hitter in a 19-0, five-inning win over Spring Creek at home on Wednesday.

Darden started and pitched three innings, yielding no hits with no walks. Pearsall entered in the fourth and gave up only one single -- a base hit by Brittani Billups.

Rachel Reynolds led five Saints with multiple hits with a four-for-five effort with three RBI. Alyssa Bradshaw added three hits and three RBI, while Scarlett Joyner and Katie Westfall added two hits and two RBI each. Beth Brown also contributed two hits and drove in one.

Southern Wayne improved to 6-4 overall and travels to West Craven for a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference game next Tuesday.

S. Central tops Rams

WINTERVILLE -- Greene Central's Ashley Oakes had one hit as the Rams fell 7-0 at South Central on Wednesday.

Jessie Odom struck out seven in five innings of work for the Falcons (9-2) to pick up the win.

Brittany Leggett got the loss for Greene Central.

The Rams (2-4) host North Pitt on Friday in their Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opener.

Chargers edge ND

LITTLEFIELD -- Ayden-Grifton scored once in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 6-5 decision at home over North Duplin in Class 1-A Carolina Conference action on Wednesday at home.

The Rebels erased a 5-0 deficit after two innings to battle back to tie the game heading into the bottom of the fifth. Casey Pate, Kayla Myers and Elizabeth Lane drove in one run each for North Duplin (6-2 overall), which dropped to 2-2 in league play.

Myers went all nine on the mound for the Rebels, striking out four against three walks. Myers gave up only three earned runs.

North Duplin returns to conference play at home on Friday against Farmville Central.

Golf

Walderman shines

Charles B. Aycock's Ryan Walderman turned in his best round of the season by firing a three-under, 69 as the Falcons defeated Greene Central and Wilson Beddingfield in non-confernece action at Lane Tree on Wednesday.

The Falcons' Ryan Campbell shot a 71, while Jonathan Burke notched a 74. Will Vinson (80), Redding Pittman (84) and Michael Stevens (84) also competed for Aycock.

Greene Central's Josh Elmore fired a 79 to lead the Rams. Teammates Brandon Jones and Blake Sutton added an 85 and 87, respectively. Colby Murphy (89), Chase Owens and Mason McLawhorn also competed for Greene Central.

C.B. Aycock (29-1) travels to Washington for a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference match on Monday.

Tennis

WCDS drills Trinity

Wayne Country Day lost just one match on the afternoon in an 8-1 win over Trinity of Raleigh on Wednesday at the Wayne Community College courts.

Ross Wilson, David Wilson, George Mayo, Byron Bryan and Alex Proimos all claimed straight-set victories for the Chargers, who improved to 4-1 on the season.

In doubles, Ross Wilson-Proimos, David Wilson-Bryan and Mayo-Luxman Srikanthra helped Wayne Country Day sweep.

The Chargers travel to Kerr-Vance for a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match today.

Patriots claim win

ATLANTIC BEACH -- West Carteret took four of the six singles matches against Charles B. Aycock on their way to a 6-3 win at the Island Beach and Racquet Club on Wednesday.

The Golden Falcons got singles wins from Sean Kelly and David Williams at three and four, respectively. The doubles combination of Danny Fairchild and Brandon Howard emerged with the lone doubles win as Aycock (4-5 overall) fell to 2-4 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference.

West Carteret improved to 5-1 in the ECC.

The Falcons return to action today at Southern Wayne.

Soccer

Eagles tumble

North Lenoir's Katie Maloney scored two goals to help boost the Panthers to a 2-0 win over Rosewood at Branch Pope Field on Wednesday.

Maloney scored on a penalty kick in the first half, before tallying her second goal off of a header just before intermission.

Rosewood (1-1-2) hosts SouthWest Edgecombe on Monday.

Gudac leads NJ

TARBORO -- North Johnston's Jenna Gudac finished with two goals, both coming in the first half, as the Panthers defeated Tarboro 3-0 at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday.

Heather Creech added a goal and an assist for North Johnston (5-1-1, 2-0 Class 2-A/1-A Eastern Plains/Carolina Conference), which outshot the Vikings 19-3.

Tarboro (1-4-1) fell to 0-2 in conference play.

North Johnston returns to its home field for the first time in over a month today when it hosts James Kenan in a non-confernece match.

Middle schools

Spring Creek softball 12, Dillard 2; Spring Creek 11, Dillard 2 -- Spring Creek's Jordan Coor smacked a home run each game of the doubleheader, while Lisa Mozingo had a home run in the second game and two hits in the first game. Casey Coor added a home run in game two as teammate Kristen Beasley notched a home run and a double. Elizabeth Wilkens got the win in game one. Casey Coor picked up the win in game two. The Gators (3-2, 2-1) host Goldsboro today.
