PREP ROUNDUP: Warriors shock Greenville Rose

GREENVILLE -- Eastern Wayne's Airlon Vinson had two hits as the Warriors handed two-time, defending Class 4-A champion J.H. Rose a 2-1 loss in Greenville on Monday.

The loss was the Rampants' first of the season as Eastern Wayne improved to 4-2 overall.

Billy McKinley (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Warriors, yielding four hits in four innings of work with two strikeouts and no walks. Jesse Lancaster notched the save, tossing a scoreless final three innings and giving up only one hit with three strikeouts.

In an early-season loss to Rose, the Warriors committed a handful of key, defensive miscues. Eastern Wayne bounced back in the rematch with flawless defensive play.

"We played great defense yesterday and made the routine plays," Warriors coach Jabo Fulghum said. "When you do that, you always give yourself a chance to win."

John Yates and Tyler Ham drove in Eastern Wayne's runs in the second and third inning, respectively.

Mike Hallow got the loss for Rose. The Rampants' lone run came in the top of the first on a home run by Ryan Graepel.

Lancaster contributed one hit for Eastern Wayne, who travels to face Wilmington New Hanover on Wednesday.

Rams fall

at South Central

WINTERVILLE -- Greene Central's Hunter Chase and Travis Rouse had one double each as the Rams fell 4-1 at South Central on Monday.

The home-standing Falcons tallied three runs in the first, while the Rams scored their lone run in the fifth.

Matt Scoggin had two hits and three RBI for South Central (5-2).

Drew Sowers got the loss for Greene Central (3-3) as Bryant Cook picked up the win for the home team.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Morgan Albritton drove in the Rams' lone run in a 3-1 loss at home to South Central on Monday.

Cassie Webb pitched all seven innings for Greene Central (2-2) and picked up the loss.

Jessie Odom paced the Falcons at the plate and on the mound, going 3-for-3 and tossing all seven innings.

Saints suffer

home loss

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Lesli Darden yielded just four hits with six strikeouts in the Saints' 2-1 loss at home Saturday to Wilson Hunt.

Darden helped her cause with an RBI, while teammates Alyssa Bradshaw and Scarlett Joyner provided one hit each.

The Saints (3-3) travel to West Carteret on Tuesday in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference contest.

top Washington

WASHINGTON -- With only 14 players available due to various injuries, Eastern Wayne handed Washington a 2-1 defeat in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action on Monday in Pamlico County.

The Warriors forced a tie in the 78th minute when Natalie Taylor won a foot race to a loose ball in the penalty box, then knocked a shot past Pam Pack goalie Sam Yates -- forcing overtime.

Samantha Frazer tallied the game-winning goal late in the second overtime half, scoring from 12 yards out into the lower right corner.

Eastern Wayne outshot the home team 17-9.

Carol Reinier had six saves in goal for the Warriors (2-3, 2-0 ECC), who host West Carteret on Wednesday.

Yates had eight saves in the goal for Washington (2-2-1, 0-1). Meredith Knox had the Pam Pack's lone goal in the 16th minute of regulation.

Patriots blank

C.B. Aycock

MOREHEAD CITY -- West Carteret freshman Lauren Miller scored twice during a three-minute stretch in the first half as the Patriots defeated Charles B. Aycock 6-0 on Monday.

Emily Stewart notched at least 20 saves in the goal for the Golden Falcons (3-3-2, 1-1 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference), who were outshot 25-5.

Aycock coach John Fidler credited sophomore midfielder Amanda Schlaeppi for her aggressiveness.

The Falcons return to action today at home against North Johnston in non-conference action.

to Wilson Christian

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day's Georgia Crowe scored twice for the Chargers in a 6-2 loss at Wilson Christian on Monday.

Playing in place of an injured starting goalie, Stephanie Knutson had five saves in goal for Wayne Country Day (1-1).

WILSON -- Wayne Christian's Ellen Rouse scored her team's lone goal in a 1-0 win over Community Christian in the Brittany Willis Memorial Scholarship Soccer Showcase in Wilson on Saturday.

Rouse's goal came nine minutes into the game on a direct kick from nearly six yards outside the 18-yard box.

Jennica Botonis grabbed 12 saves in goal for the Eagles, who improved to 3-1 overall.

Aycock has

big day in Greenville

GREENVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Jonathan Burke shot an even par, 72 to take medalist honors as the Golden Falcons rolled to a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference win at Brook Valley in Greenville on Monday.

Aycock entered the match with a three-shot lead over West Carteret in the conference race. The Falcons left with a 25-stroke margin.

Aycock finished with a team score of 314, while Eastern Wayne (331) and West Carteret (336) finished second and third, respectively. South Central (339), Washington (360), Kinston (371), Southern Wayne (374) and West Craven (416) rounded out the team scoring.

Ryan Walderman (77), Ryan Campbell (82) and Will Vinson (83) contributed to Aycock's performance.

Eastern Wayne's Miles Perry (76) led his team, while teammates Kyle Ham (83), Lance Ramsey (85) and Scott Boyette (87) added to the Warriors' second-place effort.

Southern Wayne got an 83 from Morgan Hill and an 88 from Sam Britt as Jared Jackson (100) and Jay Connelley (103) also participated for the Saints.

GC takes second

in EPC match

KINSTON -- Greene Central's Colby Murphy and Josh Elmore each fired a 76 as the Rams finished second in a Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference match at Falling Creek on Monday.

Brandon Jones added an 82 for Greene Central.

SouthWest Edgecombe took first with a team score of 318, while the Rams claimed second at 323. North Lenoir (328), Tarboro (373), South Lenoir (386) and North Pitt (409) rounded out the team scoring.

The next EPC match is scheduled for April 4 at Bradford Creek.

Hawks sweep

Ayden-Grifton

LITTLEFIELD -- North Lenoir defeated Ayden-Grifton 8-0 in a Class 2-A Eastern Plains/1-A Carolina Conference tennis match on Monday at Ayden-Grifton.

Alex Mills, Jared O'dell, Jerry Mills, Ryan Ipock and James Parker claimed straight-set singles wins, while the doubles combinations of O'dell-Mills and Ipock-Levin Jones also won easily.

Number six doubles and number three doubles were not contested.

The Hawks improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play and host Rosewood on Wednesday.
