Prep baseball -- Williams pitches CBA past Vikings

KINSTON -- Two aces locked horns here Friday, but it was Charles B. Aycock's Adam Williams that put Kinston High in a hole.

Williams gave up just two hits while striking out 10 as the Falcons blanked the Vikings 2-0 in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference clash.

The loss was Kinston's fifth straight overall. Aycock upped its record to 2-1 in league play and 3-3 overall.

"We threw our best (senior Josh Tindal) and they threw their best," Kinston coach Eddie Loesner said. "This is the type of game you get when two pitchers of this caliber hook up."

Tindal certainly pitched well enough to win, allowing just three hits and one earned run.

One of his mistakes was a second-inning hanging slider that Aycock catcher Bennett Jeffreys belted to the right-center field fence for a triple. He later scored on an errant pickoff attempt.

In the third, he walked ninth-place hitter Joseph Toler, who later tallied on a sacrifice fly to left.

After the walk to Tolder, Tindal retired 13 of Aycock's final 15 batters.

Williams, meanwhile, was cruising. He allowed a second-inning single to C. C. Croom, and then a bullet by Davin Arnold that ricocheted off Aycock shortstop Will Spence for a base hit in the sixth.

Arnold later advanced to third on a wild pickoff throw, but was left stranded. He was the only Viking to reach third in the game.

"Adam threw like we expect him to," Aycock coach Charles Davis said. "He was one of our better pitchers last year, but he's struggled with his control in his previous two starts. Today he looked like the Adam of old."

The senior southpaw evened his record at 1-1 with the complete game victory. Last year, as a junior, he recorded a 6-2 mark for the Falcons.
