MOC's Carter honored by CVAC

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College first baseman Josh Carter was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Baseball Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. The award marks the third consecutive week a Mount Olive player has earned CVAC player or pitcher of the week honors. Philip Pennington and Justin Staatz won the pitcher of the week award the previous two weeks.

Carter, a sophomore from Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne High School), hit .632 in four games last week, including a .688 batting average (11-for-16) in Mount Olive's three-game sweep at Belmont Abbey. Carter homered in each of his first three games last week and went 5-for-5 with five runs batted in to spark a 21-hit attack in Mount Olive's 21-4 victory over Belmont Abbey.

Carter also had a pair of three-hit games against Belmont Abbey to extend his current hitting streak to 14 games. He opened the week with a three-run homer against nationally 28th-ranked Francis Marion. He drove in four runs in the Trojans' first game against Belmont Abbey and three runs against Francis Marion. Defensively, Carter posted a 1.000 fielding percentage in 31 chances at first base.

For the season, Carter is hitting .415 with six home runs, 11 doubles and 32 runs batted in. He leads the Trojans in runs scored with 29.

Mount Olive (14-15 overall, 7-5 CVAC) returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans head to Petersburg, Va., to take on Virginia State in a non-conference match-up. Game time is 1 p.m.
