GREENVILLE -- North Johnston advanced into the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A men's East Region final on Friday night with a 58-48 win over Camden County at Minges Coliseum on the East Carolina University campus.

Junior guard Brandon Sanders led the Panthers, champions of the Carolina Conference and Sectional No. 2, with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Panthers (20-7) face Wallace-Rose Hill tonight at 7 for the East crown. Results of the game will appear in Monday's edition of the News-Argus.

Camden (19-7) was a mere 15-of-45 from the field and trailed by as many as 15 points at one point.

"I thought we did a really good job tonight effort-wise on defense. We got out to their shooters. We knew they were a good 3-point shooting team, and we wanted to be sure we got to them and put some hands in their faces," first-year North Johnston coach Derrick Johnson told the Wilson Daily Times.

Bass hurls no-hitter

for James Kenan

WARSAW -- Matt Bass pitched a five-inning no-hitter Friday evening as James Kenan moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 20-1 win over Jones County Senior High.

Bass recorded 13 strikeouts on the mound, while adding a doble, triple, three RBIs and four runs scored at the plate.

Eric Benson had two hits and scored four runs for the Tigers.

James Kenan takes the field again on Tuesday at Topsail. First pitch is 7 p.m.

WCDS gets offensive

in victory

The Wayne Country Day baseball team scored 10 runs in the first inning Friday and eased past Terra Ceia 18-4.

Trent Langston picked up the win on the mound, striking out nine in three innings. Langston also was 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs.

Spenser Briggs added a grand-slam homer for the Chargers and collected a game-high six RBIs.

Eagles even mark

on diamond

Rosewood even its overall record at 1-1 on Friday afternoon by taking a 13-4 win over visiting Wilson Fike of the Class 3-A Big Eight North Conference.

Kyle Bunn was 2-for-3 for the Eagles and picked up the win on the mound, striking out five over four innings.

Rosewood hosts Parrott Academy of Kinston next wednesday at 4:30.

Greene Central

edges Jags

FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central pinned the second loss in as many outings on the visiting Greene Central baseball team on Friday. The Jaguars edged the Rams 4-3.

Dusty Speedy led the Rams by gong 3-for-3 with two doubles. Travis Rouse was issued the loss on the mound.

Both team combined for eight errors.

Greene Central is back in action again on Tuesday with a home date against another Class 1-A Carolina Conference foe -- Spring Creek.

N. Lenoir remains

perfect in rout

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Brittany Sanders struck out 10 batters on her way to a perfect game Friday evening, and the North Lenoir softball team ripped Spring Creek 17-0.

The Lady Hawks are now 2-0 on the season.

Morgan Washington (triple, double) and Ashley Griffin (double) had two hits each, and Leslie Oliver drove in two runs for North Lenoir.

North Lenoir hosts Havelock on Monday.

Saints post

comeback win

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Haley Fail had two hits, including a triple and the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh as the Saints defeated Wilson Beddingfield 7-6.

Scarlett Joyner added two hits with three RBI and two doubles, while Danielle Wilkins conrtibuted two hits and an RBI.

Southern Wayne had two hits going into the sixth, then erupted for eight hits in 11/3 inning to overcome a 6-0 deficit.

Karen Thornton went the distance on the mound for the Saints (2-0). Thornton walked one with two strikeouts and gave up four earned runs.

Southern Wayne hosts Kinston on Tuesday in its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener.

Fike shoots down

Lady Eagles

Wilson Fike's softball team evened its record at 1-1 with a 14-5 triumph at Rosewood on Friday afternoon.

The Lady Golden Demons forged a 5-0 lead after three innings in dealing Rosewood its first loss against a win.

Junior catcher Heather Williams triggered Fike's 11-hit offense, batting 4-for-5 with a triple and double and scoring three runs.

Sophomore shortstop Kellen Skinner went 2-for-5 and scored three runs. Sophomore center fielder April Langley rapped a double and single in five at-bats and scored three runs

Winning pitcher Elizabeth Clayton registered six strikeouts.

Webb outpiches

Farmville Central

SNOW HILL -- Cassidy Webb struck out 10 while walking none and allowing no earned runs Friday as the Greene Central softball team downed Farmville Central 5-1.

The Rams overcame five errors to pull out the win.

Greene Central returns to action on Tuesday, taking on Ayden-Grifton.

FARMVILLE -- Michael Speedy scattered nine hits over seven innings Friday afternoon as the Greene Central JV baseball team defeated Farmville Central 5-4.

Speedy struck out eight and allowed two earned runs.

Curtis Braswell led the Rams at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double.

Visiting Greenville Rose took a 13-1 win over the Eastern Wayne JVs in five innings on Thursday afternoon. Rose pounded out 11 hits in the win.

Chad Sutton was the losing pitcher for the Warriors.

Nolan Lancaster had Eastern Wayne's lone hit.

Eastern Wayne's JVs return to the diamond on Tuesday at South Central. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.
