Prep roundup: Warriors cruise in ECC 3-A tennis matchup

Eastern Wayne captured two doubles wins and cruised past Washington 6-3 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference men's tennis match on the Wayne Community College courts.

The second-seeded tandem of Jared Stone-Alex Bryant doubled up Craig Davis-Neil Patrick 8-4. The Warriors' No. 3 duo of Lee Ingles-Drew Jackson dominated Will Whitley-Trey Moore 8-2.

Stone, Jackson, Ingles and Drew Ziccardi each triumphed in singles for Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors (1-1, 1-0 ECC) travel to West Carteret next Monday afternoon.

Hunt nips C.B. Aycock

WILSON -- Wilson Hunt picked up two key doubles victories and nipped Charles B. Aycock 5-4 in non-conference match between future league foes on Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors tallied wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

Top-seeded Danny Fairchild, Brandon Howard and David Williams each earned a singles win for Aycock. Fairchild-Howard, the No. 1 seed in doubles, cruised past Hunt's Joey Halpert-Ryan Wetherington 8-4.

Aycock (1-1) entertains Southern Wayne next Monday afternoon.

Hawks cruise

SNOW HILL -- Alex Mills and Jared O'dell each dropped a game in their respective opening sets and helped North Lenoir dominate Farmville Central 7-2 in Classes 1-A/2-A Carolina/Eastern Plains Conference action Thursday afternoon.

Mills prevailed 6-1, 6-0 against Ben Adams at the No. 1 slot. O'dell recorded the same result against James Newsome at the No. 2 spot. Teammates Ryan Ipock, James Parker and Rufus Hill each notched a straight-set win.

The tandems of Ipock/Levin Jones and Clinton O'dell/Josh Anderson accounted for the Hawks' doubles wins.

"The team had a good performance in some windy conditions," first-year North Lenoir coach Courtney Harrell said. "I was particularly impressed with number three doubles. Clinton and Josh played well and that gives me some confidence in our depth."

North Lenoir (1-1, 1-1 C/EPC) travels to Kinston next Monday.

Rosewood unbeaten

Rosewood swept the singles and doubles en route to a 9-0 decision against Ayden-Grifton in Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Reigning Carolina singles champion Wesley Lovelady, Joey Churchwell, Brandon Hietpas, Ty Johnson, J.P. Cummins and Daniel Ellis each picked up a straight-set singles win.

Lovelady-Churchwell, Hietpas-Johnson and Drew Kriger-Josh Fail dominated their respective doubles matches.

Rosewood (2-0, 1-0 C/EPC) travels to North Lenoir next Tuesday.

Women's soccer

Chargers rout Trinity

Christin Gribb recorded the natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) and added two assists in Wayne Country Day's 6-0 conquest of Trinity Christian-Greenville on Thursday afternoon.

Grubb scored off assists from Georgia Crow (two) and Sarah Coleman.

Virginia Best benefited from two first-half assists from Grubb, while Coleman collected a goal off a free kick.

Goalkeeper Ellen Elmore earned the shutout with one save.

Baseball

Duo sparks Tigers

WARSAW -- Matt Bass and Eric Benson each provided a four-hit performance in James Kenan's 16-6, season-opening victory Thursday afternoon against Pender County.

Officials halted the game after 41/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Montral Outlaw added two hits and three RBI for Kenan, while scoring four runs.

David Burgette yielded only two earned runs and picked up the win on the mound -- striking out four against one walk in five innings of work.

The Tigers (1-0) host Jones Senior today.

Rams fall in opener

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Travis Rouse and Matthew Whitley had two his apiece as the Rams suffered an 8-5 loss at home on Thursday to West Craven.

Greene Central carried a 5-0 lead into the top of the fourth, before the Eagles erupted for six runs on their way to outscoring the Rams 8-0 in the final four innings.

Caleb Weatherington and Chris Hagen had two hits each for West Craven. Clayton Moore got the win on the mound for the Eagles.

Matthew Whitley got the loss for Greene Central (0-1), which travels to Farmville Central today.

Wildcats rally

CALYPSO -- Hobbton collected seven runs in the final two innings combined and rallied past North Duplin 7-5 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

The Wildcats capitalized on 14 walks issued by four North Duplin pitchers in the regulation seven-inning game. Matt Braswell, who started, returned in relief and yielded four runs (all earned) on four walks and two hits in the final two innings.

Braswell finished with one hit and two RBI, while Ryan Smith provided a hit and an RBI.

Hobbton's Ross Thorton threw a complete game, striking out four and walking none. Teammates Will Herring and Hunter Capps combined for four hits and two RBI.

North Duplin fell to 1-1 overall.

Softball

Hill leads Rosewood

Courtney Hill delivered a three-hit performance as Rosewood rolled past Wayne Christian 11-3 in the season-opening game for both teams Thursday afternoon.

April Pfeiffer doubled in three at-bats and Kasey Grey ripped a triple for the Eagles, who entertain Wilson Fike this afternoon.

Pitcher Chandra Meadows (1-0) scattered two hits and retired four Fike batters on strikeouts in a five-inning stint. Aubrey Reinhard yielded two hits and struck out two in two innings of relief.

Rams post shutout

HAVELOCK -- Brianna Williams recorded the lone hit in Eastern Wayne's 5-0, non-conference loss Thursday afternoon at Havelock.

Wendy Gardner allowed four hits and struck out five in a complete-game effort.

The Warriors (0-2) open Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play at home next Tuesday against South Central.

Myers has good day

CALYPSO -- Kayla Myers fanned eight Hobbton batters and surrendered two hits in a complete-game effort as North Duplin turned back the Wildcats 5-1 on Thursday afternoon.

North Duplin led 2-0 before striking for three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Hobbton touched Myers for a single run in the seventh. However, the Wildcats couldn't keep the momentum.

Kristen Jones, Heather Pate and Jessica Pridgen each had a single for the Rebels.

Men's golf

G. Central claims meet

FARMVILLE -- Defending Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference champion Greene Central claimed first in a three-team match at Farmville Country Club on Thursday.

The Rams finished at 329, with Williamston (367) taking second and Farmville (386) claiming third.

Brandon Jones paced Greene Central with a 77 as Colby Murphry (81), Josh Elmore (81) and Blake Sutton (90) also contributing to the team total.

The Rams (1-0) travel to Ayden-Grifton Country Club to face D.H. Conley on Monday.

Aycock falls to Fike

PIKEVILLE -- Ryan Walderman carded a 4-over par 76 in windy conditions in C.B. Aycock's season-opening, 309-320 loss against Wilson Fike at Lane Tree on Thursday afternoon.

Fellow Golden Falcons Jonathan Burke and Ryan Campbell each turned in 18-hole rounds of 78. Will Vinson provided an 88.

Fike's J.T. Griffin emerged the medalist with a 2-under par 70. Brett Emmers and Tommy Evelyn each contributed a 78, while Zack Gliarmis ended the day with an 83.

Aycock (0-1) continues play Monday at Southern Wayne Country Club.

Men's track

Taylor, Rams prevail

SNOW HILL -- Sprinter Robert Taylor seized victories in the 300 intermediate hurdles and 110 hurdles in Greene Central's 70-65 win against South Central at the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex.

Taylor finished the 300 hurdles in 45.95 seconds and ran the 110 in 18.22.

The Rams also got individual wins from Mario Brown (discus), John Flowers (shot put), Ellis Rodgers (triple jump) and Devon Smith (long jump).

JV baseball

Price, Rose lead CBA

Brandon Price and Jay Rose combined for 19 strikeouts and limited Rosewood to two hits as C.B. Aycock prevailed 10-2 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

Price, Evan Medford and Jordan Carr each had two hits for the Golden Falcons (1-0).

C.B. Aycock visits Greene Central next Thursday afternoon.

Middle schools

Rosewood baseball 6, Norwayne 2 -- Cody Richards struck out 11 and allowed just four hits for the Eagles. Matt Neal had two hits. Rosewood (1-0) travels to Greenwood on Monday.

Grantham softball 19, Goldsboro 0 -- Morgan Davis picked up the win on the mound for Grantham and contributed three hits, including a home run. Taylor Reaves had three hits, with a double and a home run. Teammate Tara Hirsch also had three hits, including a double and triple. Grantham (1-0) travels to Eastern Wayne on Monday.

Brogden baseball 17, Spring Creek 6 -- Michael Lovelace yielded four hits and struck out four in a four-inning stint. Nick Hatem led the Rams with three hits. Charles Broggi doubled and drove in four runs. Scott Holloman added two hits and two RBI. Brogden (1-0) entertains Dillard next Monday, while Spring Creek (0-1) travels to Norwayne.

Spring Creek softball 19, Brogden 17 -- Lisa Mozingo and Kristen Beasley each had four hits for the Gators. Teammates Jordan Coor, Amy Parker, Ivy Campbell, Sarah Kicker and Casey Coor each turned in multiple-hit efforts. It was the season opener for both teams.
