MOUNT OLIVE - Alexis Briley went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and Shauna Cowdrey allowed only one run (unearned) in six innings pitched to lead Mount Olive to a 4-3 victory over Anderson in Game 2 of a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference softball doubleheader Sunday at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
In the first game, four errors in the third inning led to four unearned runs and Ashley Rogers pitched a five-hit shutout as Anderson defeated Mount Olive 9-0.
Mount Olive (3-5 overall, 3-1 CVAC) was down by only one run in game one when Anderson's (8-12, 4-2) first three batters in the top of the third reached bases on errors. Passmore and Carolyn Smith had RBI-singles in the inning and Anderson added another run on a dropped fly ball with the bases loaded to take a 5-0 lead. Passmore singled home a run for Anderson in a two-run sixth inning and Cindy Crosby hit a two-run triple in the seventh to cap the scoring.
In the second game, Mount Olive leadoff batter Kim Goens lined the first pitch to the gap in left-center for a double and scored when Melissa Bright reached on an error on a sacrifice attempt. Bright scored after a pair of wild pitches to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Mount Olive added a run in the fourth as Kristen Tettemer reached on a fielder's choice and scored from first on Briley's double to right. Anderson got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the fifth when Melissa Waters scored on a wild pitch and Jessica Hoffman scored on Passmore's infield single. Hoffman reached base when her bunt single down the third base line stayed fair.
Mount Olive added what proved to be a much-needed insurance run as Kristie Smith hit a one-out double and pinch-runner Colleen Thomas advanced to third on Tettemer's sacrifice. Thomas scored when Briley beat out an infield hit to the shortstop.
Cowdrey allowed five hits through four scoreless innings and after switching positions in the fifth inning with first baseman Erin Case, Cowdrey returned to the mound for the final two innings. Anderson scored a run on a pair of singles, a passed ball and an error, but the Trojans held on for the win when Case stretched for the ball at first base on a game-ending ground out to Goens at shortstop.
Briley, Goens and Smith had two hits apiece for Mount Olive in game two. Both of Smith?s hits were doubles. Passmore went 6-for-9 for Anderson with three hits in each of the two games in the doubleheader.
Mount Olive is off until Thursday when the Trojans play host to Bridgewater (Va.) in a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is 2 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. Anderson plays host to nationally second-ranked Kennesaw State in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at 2 p.m.
