CHAPEL HILL - The N.C. High School Athletic Association's regional basketball tournaments will get underway this week as the state's prep teams continue the road toward the state championships.

Among those gunning for a state title in the Class 3-A ranks are the Lady Cougars from Goldsboro High School, who face High Point Central (28-1) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at J.H. Rose High School. This marks the third straight apperance by Goldsboro under the guidence of coach Gladys McClary, the 2004-05 Eastern Carolina Conference 3-A coach of the year.

The Lady Cougars (26-3) closed out their tenure in the ECC by winning 41 straight conference games -- including this season's regular-season and tournament championships.

Sectional winners from the East will be going to Greenville for the 15th straight year for the Eastern Regionals. The men's games will be played at Minges Coliseum on the campus of East Carolina University, while the women's contests are set for J.H. Rose. In the West, teams will be going to Winston-Salem for the second consecutive time after a 21-year run in the Hickory area. Games will be played at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, both in the coliseum and the annex.

There is one adjustment to the schedule this year in the West due to facilities, and that will put the 1-A men's games on Wednesday at Mount Tabor High School.

The Greater Winston-Salem Sports Commission and the Winston-Salem Convention and Visitors Bureau are the primary sponsors of the Western Regional tournament. University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina and Cambridge Behavioral Health Services are the Eastern Regional primary sponsors.

The winners from the regional tournament games will advance to the state championship contests. The 91st men's championships and the 34th renewal of the women's finals will be held at the Dean E. Smith Center on the University of North Carolina campus and Reynolds Coliseum at North Carolina State University, scheduled for March 12.

A press conference for the state championships was held this morning at the Radisson Research Triangle Park. The head coaches of each of the competing teams and other school officials will on hand to preview the upcoming games.

Details from the press conference will appear in Tuesday's News-Argus.
