Trojans joust Knights in CVAC baseball twinbill

MOUNT OLIVE -- Santos Estremera and Lance Martin sparked an 18-hit attack with four hits apiece and Philip Pennington tossed a nine-inning complete game three-hitter as Mount Olive defeated St. Andrews 15-1 in game one of their NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Scarborough Field.

In the second game, Jonathan Skelley walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth as the Trojans won 6-5 to complete the doubleheader sweep.

In the first game, Mount Olive (9-9, 3-2 CVAC) took a one-run lead into the bottom of the fifth Josh Carter doubled home a run and Stephen Nordan hit a two-run homer to give the Trojans a 5-1 lead.

The Trojans broke the game open in a five-run sixth inning as Estremera hit a two-run double and Carter hit a three-run homer. The Trojans capped the scoring with five more runs in the eighth, highlighted by Matt Rickard's three-run homer.

Pennington (3-0) retired the first seven batters he faced and held St. Andrews hitless until giving up a leadoff single in the fourth. He struck out five, walked one and retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced.

In the second game, the Trojans broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Carter and Nick Paniccia had RBI-doubles. St. Andrews (7-8, 1-3) rallied with four runs in the top of the fifth, two coming on a triple by Greg Wrape.

St. Andrews took its first lead in the top of the sixth when Ritchie Priest hit a leadoff triple and scored on a ground out. But Mount Olive tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Anthony Williams, who hit a two-run single in the fourth, reached on an error to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth when Ricky Davis' double gave the Trojans runners on second and third with nobody out. After an intentional walk to Paniccia loaded the bases, Skelley worked the count full before drawing the bases on balls for the game winner.

Brett Williams (2-2) pitched the final three innings for Mount Olive for the win.

The two teams close out the three-game series with a single game today at 1 p.m. at Scarborough Field.
