MOUNT OLIVE -- Kim Goens singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth and Ashley Napoles did not allow a hit after the first inning as Mount Olive defeated Lees-McRae 1-0 in game one of their NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
In the second game, Shauna Cowdrey and Erin Case combined on a two-hitter as Mount Olive (2-4, 2-0 CVAC) defeated the Bobcats 6-1 to complete the sweep.
In the first game, Napoles (1-1) gave up singles to the first two batters she faced, then retired 17 of the next 18 batters she faced before walking two batters in the sixth. Napoles finished with a two-hitter, striking out six.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the eighth, when Goens' one-out line drive to the fence plated Melissa Bright with the game-winning run.
In the second game, base hits by Goens and Jamie Pruitt highlighted a four-run third inning as the Trojans broke a scoreless tie. Lees-McRae (4-11, 0-2) avoided the shutout in the top of the fourth on Greta Turner's one-out RBI-single. Mount Olive used a single by Colleen Thomas, a walk, a hit batsmen and two stolen bases to score two more runs in the sixth.
Mount Olive returns to action today against Anderson (S.C.) College in a CVAC doubleheader. Game time is 1 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
