PREP PLAYOFFS: Wayne Country Day meets defeat in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE - Wayne Country Day junior Adam Wright scored 13 points in a 62-43 loss to Gaston Day in the final eight of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state tournament at Charlotte Country Day on Thursday.

The loss concludes the Chargers season at 19-8 under coach Randy Tilley, in his first year at the helm at Wayne Country Day.

"It was very emotional. In 28 years of coaching, this has been one of the most productive groups I have had," Tilley said. "They overachieved at times and achieved at times ...19 wins with a tremendous schedule.

"It was a group that could have won it all. They gave it everything they had all year."

Wayne Country Day trailed just 28-25 at the half against a much-taller Spartans' team, but eventually Gaston Day's height took control.

Six-foot-10 center Steven Hess led the Spartans, with no players smaller than six-foot-three in their lineup, with 16 points. Patrick Karskey and Devin Seaford added 12 points each..

"They were huge ... 6-10, 6-9 and 6-8 on the front line. They play a 1-2-2 zone and they spread it wide," Tilley said. "It was like trying to run through a brick wall. We kept trying to penetrate and get through the seems, but they were too strong.

Spenser Briggs added 10 points -- finishing with 1,005 points in two years with Wayne Country Day. Tavon Waters added 10 for the Chargers. Seniors' Briggs, Oscar Ball, Kevin Logan and Alex Proimos played in their final games for WCDS.

Gaston Day faces Victory Christian today in the semifinals.

Panthers advance,

top N. Brunswick

KENLY -- North Johnston's Helen Moore dropped in 16 points as the Panthers defeated North Brunswick 42-35 in the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association Sectional semifinals on Thursday.

The win sends North Johnston into the sectional finals on Saturday at Midway, which has won 17 straight games after defeating Rosewood last night.

Hawks fall

in second round

HILLSBOROUGH -- North Lenoir's women's basketball team suffered a second-round loss at Hillsborough Cedar Ridge on Thursday in the Class 2-A N.C. High School Athletic Association Sectional semifinals.

The Lady Hawks concluded the season at 21-6 after a 7-3 Eastern Plains Conference campaign.
