George Mason spoils home debut of MOC men's volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE - Felix Campos and Matt Steinfurth recorded 11 kills each to lead nationally 14th-ranked George Mason to a 30-18, 30-22, 30-20 victory over Mount Olive in men's volleyball Saturday at College Hall.

The match marked the first-ever home men's volleyball contest as a varsity sport for the Trojans.

Mount Olive (0-4) pulled within two after early in game one after a kill by Michael Kren, but George Mason (8-0) pulled away and built the lead to double-digits at 20-9. Steinfurth served an ace on game point for the Patriots. In Game 2, Mount Olive trailed by only one before George Mason used an 8-3 run to take a 12-6 lead. The Trojans pulled within 16-11, but George Mason built the lead to eight and Mount Olive never got any closer than six points the rest of the way.

Mount Olive took a 3-1 lead in Game 3, but George Mason scored 12 of the next 15 points and the Trojans never got any closer than six. Billy Freesmeier, who took over at the setter position to start game three, served back-to-back aces to close out the match.

Kren and Julio Arnaiz led Mount Olive with seven kills apiece. Kren also had three blocks for the Trojans. Zach Wilson recorded 20 assists.

George Mason recorded a .400 hitting percentage for the match. Dave Egan recorded 24 assists in two games, while Freesmeier tallied 16 assists in game three.

Mount Olive returns to action the weekend of March 4 as the Trojans compete in the Less-McRae College Tournament.
