MOC teams travel to Queens

MOUNT OLIVE -- In the season's first meeting between Mount Olive College and Queens, the result was a 42-point win for the Trojans, an uncharacteristically one-sided result between the two teams. Mount Olive head men's basketball coach Bill Clingan wants to make sure his team knows the score from that game doesn't carry over and tonight's contest begins with a score of 0-0.

After Saturday's winter storm gave all of the teams in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference an extended break this weekend, Mount Olive returns to action tonight as the Trojans head to Charlotte to take on Queens in a CVAC match-up. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.

The Trojans are on a five-game winning streak and have won 12 of their last 13 games.

Mount Olive (14-2 overall, 8-1), ranked No. 6 in the NCAA II East Region Top 10, is playing for the first time since Thursday's 80-65 win over St. Andrews at College Hall. Sharome Holloway went 11-for-14 from the free throw line and led four players in double figures with 18 points as the Trojans built a 15-point halftime lead and maintained that lead throughout the second half. Elton Coffield scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half.

The Trojans were scheduled to travel Saturday to Gaffney, S.C., just southwest of Charlotte, to take on Limestone, but a winter storm that hit the central and western part of the Carolinas forced the game to be postponed. All of Saturday's scheduled action in the CVAC was postponed.

A make-up date for the Mount Olive-Limestone game has not yet been announced, but it will likely take place either February 17 or February 22, the CVAC's two designated snow dates.

Queens (8-9, 5-5) is coming off a 74-69 victory at home over Limestone Thursday, giving the Royals a sweep in the season series. B.J. Timmons led Queens with 24 points and seven rebounds. Queens, which is 7-2 at home this season, snapped a four-game losing skid with back-to-back wins at home.

In the first meeting at College Hall, Coffield led six players in double figures as Mount Olive defeated Queens 104-62 on January 8. The Trojans took an 11-point lead nine minutes into the game and Queens never got back within single digits. Melvin Creddle added 17 points and dished out six assists for the Trojans.

Notes: The gate for this Thursday's game against Barton at College Hall will be donated towards the tsunami relief effort as part of a campus-wide fund-raising campaign...Maurice Horton was held to eight points Thursday against St. Andrews, snapping his streak of 10 consecutive double-figure games, the Trojans' longest streak of the season.

The Mount Olive College women's basketball team tries to snap a season-high three-game losing skid as the Trojans travel to Charlotte tonight to face Queens in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference action. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.

Mount Olive (8-7 overall, 6-3 CVAC) is coming off a heartbreaking 55-53 loss Thursday at home against St. Andrews. The Trojans rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final three minutes as Shenetta Moye's basket with nine seconds left tied the game. But after a wild scramble for a loose ball, St. Andrews scored the game-winner at the buzzer.

The Trojans began the month of January with a five-game winning streak and were on top of the CVAC standings as the lone unbeaten team at 6-0.

Despite the loss, Melanie Cobb matched a career high with 14 points and Latoria Harvey extended her streak of double-figure games to eight with 10 points. She also pulled down 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year and fifth in her last eight games.

Mount Olive was scheduled to play at Limestone Saturday, but the winter storm that hit the central and western parts of the Carolinas wiped out all of Saturday's CVAC games. A make-up date is yet to be announced.

Queens (3-14, 2-8) is coming off a 71-67 loss at home Thursday against Limestone. Carmelita Jimenez led the Royals with 16 points.

Mount Olive won the first meeting 75-65 January 8 at College Hall as Ladora Charles scored a game-high 19 points and Harvey posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Keona Corley recorded seven assists and five steals.

Notes: The Trojans will be without Ladora Charles tonight, who has to sit out the game after receiving a flagrant technical foul in Thursday's game against St. Andrews...After averaging 7.9 points in her first seven games, Latoria Harvey has averaged 16.6 points in her last eight contests, which includes a career-high 33 points against Pfeiffer three weeks ago...Mount Olive is currently fourth in the CVAC, two games out of first place. The top four teams in the CVAC standings at the end of the regular season earn first-round byes and host quarterfinal-round games in the CVAC Tournament.
