Jordan shuffling basketball schedules

The possibility of inclement weather kept the Goldsboro High men's and women's basketball teams home Friday evening.

Principals from Goldsboro and Washington agreed to postpone and reschedule the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference games because of possible snow flurries and freezing rain. The doubleheader been rescheduled for Wednesday at Washington with a slight difference in the lineup.

The varsity women and men will travel to Washington. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. However, the junior varsity girls and boys games have been moved to Goldsboro High. Those games begin at 5 p.m.

"Both principals felt like it was the best interest not to play with the possibility of inclement weather," Goldsboro athletics director Randy Jordan said. "They didn't want anyone driving that late at night. If it had been a straight trip down Highway 70, that's one thing. But going to Washington is a tough drive."

Before Wednesday's road game with the Pam Pack, Goldsboro entertains West Carteret on Tuesday. The Cougar men are 10-7 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The Patriots (10-5) enter with a 5-5 ECC worksheet after last Friday's home victory against Eastern Wayne.

Meanwhile, the Cougar women look to preserve their ECC regular-season win streak of 26 games and their No. 8 ranking in the NCPreps.com 3-A poll. Goldsboro is 15-3 overall with a perfect 10-0 conference slate.

"We control our own destiny," Jordan said.

The rescheduled contest also affects a make-up game involving North Lenoir the same evening. That game was suspended Dec. 9 after three quarters due to condensation on the playing surface.

Players slipped on the wet spots, caused by humid temperatures, on their way to the basket. Conditions worsened throughout the second half before officials, coaches and administrators from both schools agreed to conclude the game at a later date.

North Lenoir led 48-42.

"We'll have to find another time to finish that one," said Jordan, who planned to phone North Lenoir athletics director Wayne Barwick today. "Then, we'll be all caught up."

Less than three weeks remain in regular-season play. The top five teams from the conference earn a spot in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which begin Feb. 21 for the women and Feb. 22 for the men.
