Poole's last-second shot lifts C.B. Aycock over Pam Pack
WASHINGTON - Charles B. Aycock's Santavin Poole dropped in a hook shot in the lane at the buzzer on an assist from Rob Phillips as the Golden Falcons defeated Washington 83-82 on the road on Tuesday.
Poole finished with a team-high 28 points for Aycock while teammate Montrel Sims added 19 points.
The win improves the Falcons (7-8 overall) to 3-5 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference heading into their third meeting of the season with Goldsboro on Friday. Aycock and the Cougars have split the first two outings.
Washington (7-9 overall) fell to 2-6 in the ECC.
Saints bounce back on road
VANCEBORO - Southern Wayne recovered from Friday's loss to Goldsboro as Rico Whitfield scored a team-high 16 points in the Saints' 81-63 win on the road at West Craven on Tuesday.
The win improves Southern Wayne (9-6 overall) to 7-1 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference with a trip to Kinston slated for Friday. West Craven (1-13 overall) fell to 0-8 in the ECC.
Antonio Davis added 14 points for the Saints, while Akeem Royal and Justin Bellamy scored 11 points each.
West Craven travels to Washington on Friday.
WCDS pounds Halifax Academy
Wayne Country Day's Spenser Briggs poured in a season-high 39 points as the Chargers dropped Halifax Academy 130-35 on Tuesday at home in their Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference opener.
Adam Wright also had a season-high with 32, while Alex Proimos (16 points) and Tavon Waters (15 points) also had their best scoring outputs of the year. Jeff Franklin added 12 for the Chargers (12-3, 1-0 CPIC).
Wayne Country Day, ranked third in the latest NCIPSAA 1-A poll, continues conference action at home on Friday against Kerr-Vance -- the top-ranked 2-A team in the state.
Princeton wins non-league tilt
BEAR GRASS - Princeton's Karter Yutzy scored 26 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the Bulldogs clipped Bear Grass 55-39 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday.
The win improves Princeton to 10-4 overall heading into a Class 1-A Carolina Conference game on Friday at Farmville Central.
Brandon Pate chipped in eight points for the Bulldogs, while Ronnie Williams led the Bears with 16 points.
Hot start leads Jags over Rebels
FARMVILLE - North Duplin's Charlton Armwood led his team with 14 points in a 74-44 loss at Farmville Central on Tuesday.
The Jaguars (6-4, 2-2 Class 1-A Carolina Conference) jumped out to a 28-8 lead after the first period as North Duplin never recovered.
Ben Adams led three Farmville players in double figures with 18 points. Doug Lloyd contributed 10 for the Rebels (3-6, 0-5 Carolina).
North Duplin hosts Rosewood on Friday, while the Jags entertain Princeton.

Aycock posts road win
WASHINGTON - Charles B. Aycock's Quaneisha Milner, Emily Stewart and Keyata Pettiford had seven points each as the Falcons tallied a 41-25 win at Washington on Tuesday.
The win improves Aycock (6-7 overall) to 5-3 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference.
Stewart also had nine rebounds for the Falcons, while Erin Medford grabbed seven boards.
Aycock hosts conference-leading Goldsboro on Friday.
Chargers edge Gators
SEVEN SPRINGS - Spring Creek's Brittani Billups had 10 points, six steals and six rebounds in the Gators' 35-32 loss at home to Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.
The Gators had 26 turnovers in the loss, while forcing 21.
Troia Morgan added seven points for Spring Creek (1-2, 0-5 Class 1-A Carolina Conference), who travel to North Johnston next Tuesday.
Ayden-Grifton (2-12 overall) improved to 1-3 in the Carolina Conference.

VANCEBORO - West Craven's Joyce Freeman scored 19 points in her team's 50-32 win at home over Southern Wayne on Tuesday.
The Saints dropped to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference with the loss.
The Eagles (3-9 overall) improved to 2-6 in the ECC.
Balanced Jags topple Rebels
FARMVILLE - Farmville Central's Brittany Talbot scored 14 points in the Jaguars' 70-26 win at home over North Duplin on Tuesday.
Talbot was one of five Farmville players with at least eight points as the Jags (8-2 overall) improved to 2-1 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference.
Sierra Ward led the Rebels (4-5, 2-3 Carolina) with nine points.
North Duplin hosts Rosewood on Friday, while Farmville entertains Princeton.

Cameron Strickland scored 18 points to lead four Wayne Country Day players in double figures as the Chargers rolled to a 68-33 win at home over Halifax Academy.
Cameron Byrd, Cory Roberts and Trent Langston scored 10 points each for the Chargers (9-4) with Langston grabbing 11 rebounds.
Wayne Country Day plays host to Kerr-Vance Academy on Friday.
Eagles down Community Christian
Wayne Christian's Matt Davis tallied 19 points in the Eagles 94-22 win at home over Community Christian on Tuesday.
The win improves Wayne Christian to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference.
Tyler Brannan added 18 for the Eagles, while Adam Brannan posted 17.
Wayne Christian hosts Community Christian at home on Saturday.
Two Taylors guide Aycock
WASHINGTON - Charles B. Aycock's Dontay Taylor posted 15 points, while teammate Jovanta Taylor added 12 as the Golden Falcons handed Washington a 58-47 loss in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action on Tuesday.
Tim Alston added 10 points for Aycock (8-5, 5-3 ECC), which hosts Goldsboro on Friday.
Cougars claim10th win
LAGRANGE - Goldsboro's Anthony Green scored 15 points, while teammate Antonio Green added 13 points in the Cougars' 60-56 win at North Lenoir on Monday.
The win improved Goldsboro to 10-4 overall heading into Friday's game at Charles B. Aycock.
