MOUNT OLIVE - Elton Coffield has been named the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's basketball player of the week, it was announced Tuesday.
Coffield, who also won the award in early December, becomes the season's first two-time recipient of the award.
A 6-4 sophomore guard from Williamston, Coffield averaged 17.3 points per game and shot 71.4 percent from the field (20-for-28) in three games last week, including a 9-for-11 performance in the Trojans' 104-62 win over Queens. He tallied game highs of 21 points against Queens and 19 points in Mount Olive's 89-63 win at Francis Marion, which advanced to the "Sweet 16" of last year's NCAA Division II playoffs.
Coffield added 12 points in the Trojans' 70-66 win at regionally fifth-ranked Barton.
Mount Olive, ranked No. 10 in the East Region poll, posted a 3-0 record last week to extend its winning streak to seven games and entered this week unbeaten in conference play and in sole possession of first place in the CVAC standings.
The win against Queens marked the fifth time in 10 games the Trojans reached the 100-point mark.
Mount Olive, which suffered its first conference loss of the season Monday against Pfeiffer, returns to action Thursday at CVAC opponent Coker (S.C.) College. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
