Fall state Wachovia Cup standings

CHAPEL HILL -- Charles B. Aycock (Class 3-A), Greene Central (Class 2-A) and Rosewood (Class 1-A) were among the top 14 in their respective classifications in the fall sports, according to the Wachovia Cup standings released by the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia Bank and the NCHSAA, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state's four competitive classifications. The Wachovia Cup program is in its 26th year.

Aycock is 11th in 3-A with 87.5 points, while Greene Central is 12th with seven other 2-A schools with 75. In the 1-A ranks, Rosewood is 14th with 75 points.

Wachovia Cup points are determined by a system based on performance in state-championship events. All schools that finish in the top-eight positions (plus ties) earn points.

Points are awarded for all sports as follows: 50 for first, 45 for second, 40 for third, 35 for fourth, 30 for fifth, 25 for sixth, 20 for seventh and 15 for eighth. In the event of a tie, the schools receive an equal number of points based on the number of teams that tie and the number of teams that finish higher in the standings.

Breakdown of local conferences:

Class 1-A Carolina: Earning top spots in volleyball and men's cross-country, Farmville Central stands on top. Rosewood finished second in football, men's soccer and women's tennis and tied for second in volleyball to hold the second-place position. Conference standings: Farmville Central 20.5, Rosewood 18.5, North Johnston 16.5, Spring Creek 13, Ayden Grifton 12.5, North Duplin 9 and Princeton 6.

Class 1-A Super Six: James Kenan holds a slim one-half point margin to sit atop the point standings. Wallace-Rose Hill placed first in football to share the second-place position with Union, which placed first in volleyball. Conference standings: James Kenan 18.5, Wallace-Rose Hill and Union 18, Midway 16.5, Lakewood 16 and Hobbton 15.

Class 2-A Eastern Plains: Greene Central finished first in women's tennis, third in volleyball and tied for second in football to capture the lead.

North Lenoir clinched conference titles in volleyball and men's soccer to lock into second place. Conference standings: Greene Central 23.75, North Lenoir 22.25, Southwest Edgecombe 18.50, South Lenoir 18, Tarboro 17.75 and North Pitt 9.75.

Class 3-A Eastern Carolina: C.B. Aycock slips by West Carteret for the top spot. Aycock finished first in women's tennis and women's golf while West Carteret finished first in women's cross-country and men's soccer.

Conference standings: C.B. Aycock 87, West Carteret 84, Eastern Wayne 80, South Central 64, Washington 53, Southern Wayne 45, West Craven 38, Kinston 36 and Goldsboro 32.
