Trojans ranked among national leaders

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive men's basketball is ranked No. 2 in scoring offense and field goal percentage, while Mount Olive women's basketball is ranked in the top 10 in rebound margin and scoring defense in this week's NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Basketball Statistics Reports.

This week's report is the first of the 2004-05 season.

In the men's basketball statistics, Mount Olive (7-1) is second in the nation in scoring with an average of 98.0 points per game. The Trojans' 55.3 field goal percentage is also the second-highest in the nation.

Mount Olive has an average scoring margin of 22.6 points per game, which ranks as the fourth-highest in the nation. The Trojans also rank seventh in the nation with a rebound margin of 11.9 boards per game.

Individually, sophomore guard Elton Coffield ranks No. 20 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 48.3 percent (21-for-43). Coffield also has the 26th-highest free throw percentage in the nation at 88.5 percent (23-for-26). Junior guard Maurice Horton ranks No. 33 in the nation in steals per game with a 2.7 average.

Mount Olive's 71.6 field goal percentage against Concord on December 1 ranks as the highest single-game field goal percentage in Division II so far this season. The Trojans' 119 points in that game is tied for the 10th-highest single-game points total.

In the women's basketball statistics, Mount Olive (3-4) ranks fifth in the nation in rebound margin, outrebounding opponents by an average of 12.3 boards per game. The Trojans also have the eighth-best scoring defense in the nation, limiting opponents to an average of 51.7 points per contest. The Trojans have held opponents to 34.4 percent shooting for the 29th-best field goal percentage defense in the nation.

The statistics rankings do not include Mount Olive's men's and women's basketball games played this past Monday.
