Second-half surges propel Goldsboro, CBA boys teams

PIKEVILLE -- Strong third-period runs on Wednesday night sparked Goldsboro and Charles B. Aycock's boys basketball teams to wins against Wayne County foes on the first night of the inaugural Falcon Holiday Invitational Tournament.

In the opening game, the Cougars uncorked an 8-0 run -- capped by a slam dunk by Daquan Joyner to take a 14-point lead with 1:21 left in the third against Wayne Country Day. The Cougars eventually improved to 9-2 with a 74-57 win in the first-ever meeting between the two boys programs.

De'onta Anderson and Tim Kornegay led four Goldsboro players in double-digits with 16 points each. Joyner added 15 points, while Tavon Waters provided 14.

"We showed we could play up tempo and slow the tempo down," Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan said. "I'm just really impressed with the effort that they gave on both ends of the floor today. I think it was one of our best efforts this season.

"We got back to that mentality we had earlier in the season, and I think we had gotten away from that."

In the night-cap, Aycock erased a two-point deficit at halftime with an 11-0 charge after intermission against rival Rosewood on their way to a 68-62 victory in front of a near-capacity crowd.

The consolation and championship games tonight set up rematches from earlier in the season. Goldsboro defeated the Falcons 98-59 in the Cougar Den, while the Chargers dropped the Eagles 90-49 at WCDS.

"I think we will step it up tomorrow, but we've got to watch Daquan (Joyner) and Tim (Kornegay), because those are two kids who can hurt you and hurt you quick. We've got to hit the boards and do a lot of boxing out," Aycock coach David West said.

The Falcon post duo of Santavin Poole and Bryan Moore combined for 26 points in the second half. Poole scored 16 of his 23 and Moore added eight -- many coming on put-backs. Montrel Sims (14 points) and Rob Phillips (13 points) paced the Falcon scoring in the first half.

"We've got to do a better job on the boards. We came out after halftime and turned the ball over four or five times in a row. We took away our chances," Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell said. "I was still pleased with our effort and how hard we played."

The Eagles got the lead down to five several times before the final horn in a competitive fourth quarter keyed by a pair of big, three-point shots by Kyle Bunn, who led his team with 17 points.

Dustin Overman finished with 15, including seven in the second period. Overman started the second period with a quick drive through the lane, and the Eagles eventually went to the locker room with a 49-47 advantage.

"Rosewood played well. They were scrappy, and they went after everything," West said. "We didn't, and that was the tale in the first half. We had a loud conversation at halftime. They listened and I talked.

"They responded in the second half. They got after loose balls and made smarter decisions."

Uncharacteristic turnovers proved to be a big hindrance in the third period by Rosewood and Wayne Country Day. The Eagles had six in the third after four in the first half. The Chargers committed 19 on the game, well below their average.

"They hit us with a zone and we started throwing the ball all over God's creation and that's not characteristic of this group," Wayne Country Day coach Randy Tilley said. "We weren't attacking the backside of the zone and we played too much in a hurry without recognizing they had jumped to a 2-3. I commend Goldsboro, because they had to execute their game plan and they did a good job."

"I told the kids they had nothing to hang their heads about. Our job now is to put this behind us and get ready for tomorrow."

Wayne Country Day cut the margin to 41-35 with three minutes left in the third on a basket by Adam Wright, who finished with a game-high 20 points. A stout defensive effort by the Cougars kept the Chargers from getting any closer as Goldsboro went on a 28-12 spurt stretching into the fourth quarter with balanced play on both ends.

"We felt we kept them off-balance with our defenses all night and maybe confused them a little bit offensively," Jordan said. "We weren't going to overplay the passing lines, but we were going to take away the backdoor-cut. They are also very good three-point shooters, and we had to keep control of the paint.

"I felt we defended all of those things. Corey Thompson did a fantastic job defensively all night."

Post play also proved key for the taller Cougars, who outrebounded their opponent 54-35 overall and had 27 offensive rebounds. Joyner grabbed 15 boards, while Anderson added 10. Joyner has now recorded a double-double in all 11 games, while Anderson provided his sixth.

Spenser Briggs chipped in 11 points for Wayne Country Day, while teammates Oscar Ball and Jeff Franklin added nine each.
