Kyle Dewberry converted a turnover into an uncontested layup and Adrian Crumel sank one free throw with three seconds remaining to give East Wake a 49-46 victory against Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors, of the Class 4-A Triangle Alliance Conference, continue play this evening at 8 o'clock against host Goldsboro in the 2004 Cougar Holiday Classic.
Beddingfield faced Knightdale at 4 p.m.
East Wake possessed a 12-point lead late in the third quarter, but the Bruins found some offensive punch in the final eight minutes.
Junior guard Dustin Maury ignited a 15-2 run with an open-court, finger-tip roll layup. Aaron King followed with a 3-pointer off Maury's assist. Shante Finch stole a pass near midcourt, easily drained the layup and forced the Warriors to burn a 30-second timeout.
Alfred Artis' offensive putback tied the game at 34-34.
Maury gave the Bruins their first lead at 36-34 on another layup, but Dewberry countered for the Warriors. Neither team led by more than one possession the rest of the way.
Artis got loose for a reverse layup, putting Beddingfield back in front 46-44. Crumel tied it at 46-46 with less than one minute remaining.
The Bruins had possession, but lost control of the ball near midcourt. Dewberry hit the go-ahead layup at the 25.6-second mark. Maury missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer with seven seconds to go and Crumel got fouled on the rebound.
A senior forward, Crumel hit the front end of the two-shot foul for the 49-46 finale.
Dewberry and Artis shared game-high scoring honors with 14 points apiece. Crumel provided eight points for the Warriors. Maury and Finch complemented Artis' effort with nine points each.
East Wake's girls struggled early offensively, but managed to trail 11-8 after one period of play. The Warriors shot 2 of 9 from the floor, committed five turnovers and the Bruins blocked two shots in the opening quarter.
Beddingfield (5-2) unleashed an 8-0 run in the second quarter and capped its 58-31 victory with a 12-0 run in the third period.
Jacobia Lucas paced the Bruins, of the Big Eight North 3-A Conference, with a game-high 18 points. October Harris contributed 17, while Latroya Pope added seven.
Latrice Barnes led the Warriors, now 1-8 overall, with 11 points. Melanie Bennett emerged the next-highest scorer with six points, all from behind the 3-point arc.
East Wake plays Goldsboro at 6 p.m. today, while Beddingfield tipped off against Knightdale in the day's first contest at 2 p.m.
