Rosewood grapplers tame opponents in annual Wildcat Clash

BUNN -- Tyler Daniels' first-period pin sealed the deal as Rosewood battled from behind to beat Southern Nash 48-36 in the title match of the Wildcat Christmas Clash contested Saturday.

The Eagles defeated Wilson Fike (60-24) and Bunn (60-22) in pool play and advanced to the gold-medal round against Northern Nash and Southern Nash.

Rosewood easily defeated Northern Nash 60-23 as the Firebirds waited in the wings. Southern held what appeared to be an insurmountable 36-18 advantage with just five individual bouts remaining.

Jim Bish, competing at 103 pounds, tied the match at 36-36 with a second-period pin. Teammate Ramsey Brown received a forfeit at 112 when the Firebirds bumped their wrestler to 119 for the decisive match against Daniels.

Daniels seized his fourth victory without a loss. Bish, Brown and Jeremiah Goodson each concluded the day 4-0. Head coach Bill Edmundson said the Eagles also received key wins from Antar Shafer, Clayton Taylor and heavyweight Michael Sander.

Rosewood (5-0) returns to action Tuesday with a five-team dual match at home. The Eagles will wrestle against county rival Eastern Wayne (5-1), Tarboro, North Johnston and Havelock.

The match begins at 5 p.m.

Robertson, Wood fare well

RALEIGH -- Charles B. Aycock's Turner Wood claimed third and John Robertson turned in a fourth-place effort at 171 pounds in the WRAL Invitational contested Friday and Saturday at Athens Drive High School.

Wood, at 189 pounds, scored a 17-1 technical fall against West Carteret's Patrick O'Reilly and claimed the bronze medal. It was a rematch of last Monday's meeting which Wood won 14-11 after breaking an 11-11 tie in the final 30 seconds.

Robertson fell to New Bern's Derek Garris 8-2 in their third-place battle.

The Golden Falcons amassed 82 points and finished tied for 12th with Pasquotank. Summerville (S.C.) emerged the team champion with 204 points, followed by Catawba Bandys (194.5), Northwest Cabarrus (156.5), Durham Riverside (156) and West Carteret (125).

C.B. Aycock returns to action Wednesday in the two-day Cary News Invitational.

Gators get C/T-RC win

KENLY -- Despite surrendering 30 points in forfeits, Spring Creek managed to defeat North Johnston 48-30 in a Class 1-A Carolina/Tar-Roanoke Conference match Friday.

Wes Denham (215 pounds), Antwan Greenfield (171), Daquan Wright (160), Tim Buckingham (152), Johnathan Lewis (140), Paul Richter (135) and Darrin Straub (119) each pinned their respective opponent for the Gators.

Matt Wilkins (103) received a forfeit.

Spring Creek (3-2) competed in the nine-team Wildcat Christmas Clash on Saturday at Bunn. Results were not available at press time.
