MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Mount Olive trimmed a 10-point deficit down to one but the rally came up short as the Trojans fell to Barry 60-54 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon.
Ladora Charles scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the second half and the Trojans outrebounded Barry by a margin of 40-27 to spark the rally.
Barry (7-3) scored the first four points of the game and led from start to finish, but Mount Olive (2-2) stayed within striking range throughout the game. After a layup by Teneal Boone pulled the Trojans within one early in the first half, Barry went on an 11-2 run to take a 17-7 lead with 11:16 left in the half.
Mount Olive cut the lead to four, but Barry extended the lead back to 10 before Melanie Cobb's jumper pulled the Trojans within 35-27 at halftime.
Mount Olive held Barry scoreless for a six-minute stretch midway through the second half as the Trojans closed the gap to 41-39 with 9:39 left in the game. But Amanda Mageean's layup capped a 6-0 run to put Barry's lead back to eight points.
Mount Olive again pulled within two as Latoria Harvey's putback and Charles' jumper cut Barry's lead to 51-49 with 5:09 remaining. After Barry scored its next four points on free throws, Harvey answered with a pair of free throws and Charles hit another jumper to pull Mount Olive within 55-54 with 2:29 remaining.
The Trojans, however, would not score again and Barry hit 5-of-6 free throws to seal the win.
Cobb finished with 10 points and both Harvey and Boone narrowly missed double-doubles as Harvey finished with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Boone tallied eight points and nine rebounds to go with four blocked shots.
Mageean led Barry with 11 points, while three other Buccaneers scored 10 points apiece.
Leann Simms tallied eight points and four steals in her first game for Mount Olive since suffering a knee injury last January against Anderson.
Barry connected on 17-of-25 free throws, while Mount Olive was 7-for-10 from the line. Cobb, Harvey and Shenetta Moye accounted for all of the Trojans' free throw attempts.
