Goldsboro boys remain unbeaten in ECC 3-A

MOREHEAD CITY -- Goldsboro High remained unbeaten in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play with a nail-biting, 65-62 conquest of West Carteret on Friday evening.

Tavon Waters paced four Cougars in double figures with 20 points. De'onta Anderson added 14, while Tim Kornegay and Daquan Joyner each provided 12 points.

"We got a great effort from Tavon," Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan said. "He came out of his shooting slump, did a great job of squaring up and shooting the ball. We got balanced scoring and we found a way to win the game down the stretch.

"We're maturing as a basketball team."

Johnny Thomas led the Patriots, who suffered their second straight ECC loss, with a game-high 22 points. Elijah Thomas contributed 14, while Drew Paulk added 12 that included a 6 for 6 effort at the free throw line.

Overall, the Patriots converted 12 of 14 free throws compared to 4 of 6 for the Cougars.

Goldsboro (6-0, 4-0 ECC) travels to South Central on Monday.

Yutzy sparks Bulldogs

PRINCETON -- Princeton's Karter Yutzy scored a season-high 35 points as the Bulldogs dropped Union 59-39 at home on Friday.

The win improves Princeton to 4-3 overall.

Brandon Pate added 14 points for the Bulldogs, who entertain Holly Ridge Dixon next Thursday.

Rodleck Beatty paced Union with 10 points.

Eagles dealt Carolina loss

Ayden-Grifton nearly doubled Rosewood's second-half offensive output and emerged victorious 52-37 in a Carolina 1-A Conference game Friday evening.

The Eagles (3-2) remained winless in two Carolina Conference outings.

"The tale of the game was turnovers," said second-year Eagles coach Daniel Mitchell, whose team was outscored 32-17 in the second half. "Ayden-Grifton gave a lot of pressure on the ball. They forced us to turn it over and we had a hard time getting anything offensively.

"Defensively, I thought we played a pretty good game."

Ayden-Grifton benefited from the free throw line, taking 29 attempts and converting 20. Meanwhile, the Eagles were 9 of 14.

Kyle Grey spearheaded the Rosewood offense with 14 points, while Kyle Bunn chipped in 10. Danny Langston added eight.

Leon Maye led the Chargers with 13.

The Eagles return to action Dec. 17 with a non-conference, county matchup at Wayne Country Day.

Panthers roll to league win

KENLY -- Jake Lomonaco sizzled the nets for a game-high 25 points as North Johnston stopped North Duplin 71-46 in a Class 1-A Carolina Conference contest Friday evening.

Willie Smith added 14 for the Panthers.

Sterling Grice turned in a 12-point effort for the Rebels, who fell to 1-3 overall. Montreal Garner added 10.

North Duplin entertains Lakewood on Monday.

J.H. Rose runs rampant

DUDLEY -- Akeem Royal emerged Southern Wayne's lone double-figure scorer with 19 points in a 94-54, non-conference loss against J.H. Rose on Friday evening.

The Saints dropped to 4-3 overall heading into Monday's contest at Eastern Carolina 3-A foe West Carteret.

Johnny McLawhorn paced the Rampants with a game-high 31 points. Jamal Johnson contributed a double-double, 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Raheem Smith provided 15 points and nine assists. Perry King chipped in 13 points.

Eagles fall to Chargers

WILSON -- Every player scored as Wilson Christian advanced into this afternoon's 1:30 championship game of its Charger Christmas Classic against Fayetteville Christian with a 74-51 triumph against Wayne Christian on Friday night.

The Chargers (6-4) trailed 18-14 after one quarter, but turned up the defensive intensity in the second quarter and took command with a 15-2 run. Wilson Christian sank 10-of-13 free throws in the 30-point quarter.

Josh Yarusinksy paced the Chargers with 12 points, while Justin Batts netted 11.

KINSTON -- T.A. Brannan pumped in a game-high 14 points in a 47-35 loss against Arendell-Parrott Academy on Friday afternoon.

Nick Woods and Eric Williams each added six points for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (7-1) returns to action Jan. 4 with a home contest against Northwood Temple.

Cougars prevail on the road

MOREHEAD CITY -- Anthony Artis pumped in a team-leading 21 points as Goldsboro escaped West Carteret 57-56 in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference battle Friday evening.

Antonio Greene added 12 for the Cougars. Goldsboro (5-2, 3-1 ECC) is the guest of South Central on Monday.

Cougars stay unbeaten

A.J. Fowler sizzled the nets for a game-high 24 points as Goldsboro High ripped East Duplin 87-50 in a non-conference battle Saturday morning.

A.J. Holloway and T.J. Kornegay contributed 17 points apiece for the Cougars, now unbeaten in four contests.

Tavon Murchison scored 14 points to help guide the Cougars past Jacksonville 64-39 at the Cougar Den on Friday. Holloway and T.J. Kornegay scored 10 points each.

Goldsboro entertains New Bern on Monday afternoon.
