Goldsboro's Daquan Joyner scored 20 points as the Cougars defeated Washington 70-68 at home on Tuesday in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference tilt.

Tim Kornegay and Raheem Loftin added 13 points each for Goldsboro, which improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 against conference foes.

The Cougars had just seven turnovers on the night, while forcing 15.

"We didn't play well last night and we found a way to win," Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan said. "We've got to play better defensively if we are going to be in the position at the end of the season to make some noise.

"Defense is the one thing we can control and we didn't control that."

Washington's Calvin Daniels led his team with 29 points, while teammate Nigel Rogers chipped in 14 points.

Goldsboro takes on future, Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference rival North Lenoir in the Cougar Den on Thursday. A large crowd is expected for the game with the Hawks and fans are encouraged to arrive as early as possible.

Briggs paces Chargers at home

Wayne Country Day's Spenser Briggs tallied a season-high 30 points as the Chargers improved to 5-1 with a 83-70, non-conference win over Waccamaw Academy on Tuesday.

Oscar Ball turned in a season-high effort with 17 points, while Adam Wright also provided 17.

Admad McBride led Waccamaw (3-3) with 22 points.

Rosewood suffers first loss

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood's Kyle Bunn posted a team-high 15 points as Carolina 1-A Conference rival Farmville Central claimed a 59-42 win on its home floor on Tuesday.

Danny Langston added eight points for Rosewood.

The Eagles (3-1, 0-1) entertain Ayden-Grifton Friday.

Cowar's steal lifts Eastern Wayne

Darryl Cowar intercepted a pass at midcourt and threw down an uncontested dunk with 3.6 seconds left as Eastern Wayne escaped West Carteret 49-48 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday.

Cowar and Lamar Davis emerged the Warriors' top scorers with 12 points apiece. Floranta Wynn added 11.

Eastern Wayne (4-1) remained unbeaten in three ECC outings and won its second conference game by one point.

SW holds off C.B. Aycock

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's T.J. Davis scored 15 points to help the Saints defeat Charles B. Aycock 60-56 at home on Tuesday.

Aycock's Brandon Haynes and Tim Alston had 13 points each for the Falcons, which dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 against Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foes.

Jaffari Ward added 10 points for the Saints, who host Greenville Rose on Friday.

The Falcons entertain Kinston Friday.

Cougars pound Pam Pack

Goldsboro's Q.T. Battle and Antonio Green scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds each as the Cougars drilled Washington 82-40 on Tuesday at the Cougar Den.

Anthony Artis added 13 points and nine assists for Goldsboro (3-2, 2-1 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference), while teammate Michael Isler scored 12.

The Cougars host North Lenoir on Thursday.

Chargers even overall slate

Wayne Country Day's Lamar Carpenter led the way with 14 points as the Chargers improved to 2-2 with an easy, 82-36 win at home over Waccamaw Academy.

Sam Steed provided 12 points off of the bench for Wayne Country Day, while Shadoe Stewart also scored 12. David Wilson pulled down 18 rebounds as teammate Tyler Pate dished out nine assists.

Jags too much for Rosewood

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood's Clerance Toran scored a team-high 11 points in the Eagles 76-47 loss at Farmville Central on Tuesday.

Farmville's Richard Williams led all scorers with 13 points as the Jaguars improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference.

Bryan Jones, Eric Jones and Dennis Jones scored seven points each for Rosewood (2-2, 0-1 Carolina), who hosts Ayden-Grifton on Friday.
