CBA splits with South Johnston

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's girls team got their first win of the season, 45-30, over South Johnston, while the Falcon boys gave their undefeated guests all they could handle before succumbing, 72-55.

With two winless teams squaring off in the girls' game, one team was finally going to pick up their first victory of the season.

Coach Gary Hales, however, was anything but happy with the win.

"I was not pleased at all with our execution and intensity. Even with the win, we took a step backwards," Hales said.

South Johnston did not score a basket until 6:27 of the second quarter. They also turned the ball over 24 times in the first half and had only one rebound in the second period.

Hales did point to some bright spots. Playing without the injured Lela Reid, he indicated that post players Danielle Street and Erin Medford "really stepped it up" in her absence.

Point guard Quaneisha Milner was also recognized by Hales for "fine passing in our transition game." Medford was high scorer on the night with 12 points.

The boys game was all Aycock in the first half and much of the third quarter. Paced by Chris Foreman and Santavian Poole, they took a 25-23 lead to the locker room at halftime. Besides scoring 12 and 13 points respectively, both players dominated under both boards.

"Aycock totally outplayed us in the first half," South Johnston coach David Dewey said. "Their defensive intensity was great and they shot the ball well."

After a three-pointer by Rob Phillips and two free throws by Foreman made the lead 30-23 at the seven minute mark, the rest of the story was all South Johnston. Led by the trio of Cole Dewey, Everson Simmons, and Deangelo Ruffin, the Trojans outscored their hosts 49-30 in the second half.

Guard Michael Gurganus hit four of his five three-point baskets in the final eight minutes.

"We've been waiting for Michael to break out all season," said coach David West. "He exploded."

"We were beating one of the best teams in the state for the better part of three periods," West continued. "Their three thoroughbreds (Dewey, Simmons, and Ruffin), finally kicked it up three to four notches, and we could only go one or two.

"I'm just as proud of our team as I could be. We stood in there and didn't back down."

Aycock's next games will be Tuesday night at Southern Wayne.

Retired NFL star and Aycock alumnus Shelton Robinson was admitted into the Falcon's Athletic Hall of Fame and had his football number retired on Friday night.
