MOC men averaging 100.6 points per game

MOUNT OLIVE -- Don't be surprised if College Hall turns to darkness Saturday after the Mount Olive College men's basketball game. After all, the Trojans have been shooting the lights out in every game this season.

Mount Olive plays its final home game before Christmas break as the Trojans play host to Erskine Saturday in the two teams' Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference opener. Tip-off is 6 p.m. at College Hall.

Mount Olive (4-1) is coming off a 119-96 victory over Concord Wednesday, the Trojans' highest point total under 15-year head coach Bill Clingan.

Elton Coffield scored a career-high 31 points to bring his season average up to 20.2 points per game. Maurice Horton added 22 points, while Melvin Creddle finished with 21 points, nine assists and no fouls in 39 minutes. Coffield, a sophomore guard from Williamston, has been the Trojans' leading scorer in four of five games this season.

Mount Olive shot 71.4 percent from the field Wednesday, connecting on 48-of-67 shots, including 11-for-20 from three-point range. The Trojans have a team field goal percentage of 56.7 percent and have shot at least 50 percent in four of their first five games

The Trojans have reached the century mark three times this season, already matching last year's total of games with at least 100 points.

Mount Olive, which came within a field goal of a fourth 100-point game in a 98-80 win over Bluefield State, is averaging 100.6 points per contest and is outscoring opponents by an average margin of 24.6 points.

Erskine (1-2) picked up its first win of the season Thursday with a last-minute 59-58 win over Lander. Reed Long, who finished with 31 points, hit a game-winning three-pointer with 7.6 seconds remaining.

Mount Olive won all three contests last year, including a 77-64 victory in the first round of the CVAC Tournament. But all three games were close throughout as the Trojans either had to come from behind or break away in the final minutes.

Saturday's contest is Mount Olive's last home game for more than a month. The Trojans will play host to Queens on January 8.
