One day after a pair of tough contests against Southeast Raleigh, Goldsboro's basketball teams made impressive showings in their Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener Tuesday against Charles B. Aycock.
Keyed by the post scoring and rebounding of Ashelyn James and Jessica Faison, the Lady Cougars collected their first win of the season -- defeating the Golden Falcons 51-41. James scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down 14 boards, while Faison added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Aycock's Quaneisha Milner dropped in 15 points for the Golden Falcons (0-4, 0-1 ECC), who never led after the first period.
"We started out slow. Playing Southeast Raleigh took something out of us," Goldsboro girls coach Gladys McClary said. "As the game progressed we got into the right positions offensively to be able to score. Getting the ball inside was key for us.
"I think our defense looked pretty good, but we have a long way to go."
Goldsboro's boys had four players post double-digit scoring efforts and converted many of the Falcons' 28 turnovers into points in a dominating, 98-59 win. The young Cougars (1-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in the early season with a 3-0 mark.
Tim Kornegay scored over 20 points for the third-straight game for Goldsboro and finished with a game-high 22, while swiping six steals and dishing out four assists. Daquan Joyner turned in his third triple-double in as many games with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.
Aycock pulled to within six at 23-17 early in the second period on a put-back by Santavin Poole, but the Cougars answered quickly with a 14-2 run in a three-minute stretch to go up 37-19. Goldsboro point guard Tavon Waters sparked the run and finished with 11 points to go with eight assists.
The Falcons (1-3, 0-1) started hot again in both the third and fourth periods, but each time the Cougars responded with stout runs and steadily pulled away in the second half.
"With our style of play, we stress it's a game of runs. We want to get more runs than them and the last run," Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan said. "We're very young, but they are understanding and accepting their roles. This team likes each other and plays hard."
Raheem Lofton contributed 15 points and six rebounds off the bench in a balanced Goldsboro effort that saw nine players score at least five points. Chris Foreman led the Falcons with 12 points, while teammate Montrel Sims chipped in 11 points.
"Randy has a very good team on offense and defense. They do exactly what he tells them and coaches them to do," Aycock coach David West said.
In the girl's game, Aycock's Jazzmine Lee knocked down a jumper early in the third quarter to finish an 8-2, Falcon run and pull her team to within two at 32-30. The Cougars countered with their own 8-2 push -- capped by a quick pass from the top from Chevoya Jackson to Faison. Jackson had six points, six assists and four steals from the point.
Goldsboro led 42-34 after three quarters and never allowed Aycock to get closer than seven in the final period.
Lela Reid scored 11 points, including eight in the first half, for the Golden Falcons.
"They established their presence inside," Aycock coach Gary Hales said. "The difference between them and us is they stay within their system the entire game. For 24 minutes we stayed in our system but six minutes we abandoned it. In those six minutes, they were able to take control."
Aycock returns to action tonight in Pikeville to take on future ECC foe Wilson Beddingfield. The Cougars host West Craven on Friday in conference play.
