Mount Olive women top Apprentice

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Ladora Charles scored all of her 19 points in the second half and Keona Corley dished out 11 assists to lead Mount Olive to a 64-43 victory over the Apprentice School in non-conference women's basketball Monday at Newport News. Charles scored 12 points in a span of less than four minutes as the Trojans broke open a close game.

Mount Olive (1-1) trailed by as many as six points before Corley's jumper capped a run of 10 unanswered points and gave the Trojans a 14-10 lead with 9:20 left in the first half. Apprentice (1-3) came back to tie the game at 18-18, but Mount Olive sandwiched field goals by Anita Rogers and Heidi Busch around a three-pointer by Elaine Larson for a 7-0 run to put the Trojans ahead to stay. Apprentice cut the lead to two before Mount Olive went into halftime with a 28-24 lead.

Charles, who missed both of her field goal attempts in the first half, hit a three-pointer just eight seconds into the second half to extend the Trojans' lead to seven. Apprentice pulled within three points, but Charles and Melanie Cobb combined for all of the points in an 18-4 run to put Mount Olive ahead 49-32 with 11:00 remaining. Cobb, who was also held scoreless in the first half, finished the game with 10 points and seven rebounds. The Trojans built the lead to as many as 25 points in the second half.

Mount Olive outrebounded Apprentice 46-35 for the game, including a 25-15 edge in the second half. Sierra Medeiros also pulled down seven rebounds for the Trojans. Corley played only 19 minutes and her 11 assists came in only her second collegiate game. No Trojan player had reached double-figures in assists in a single game last season.

Brandi Coffer led Apprentice with 11 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Upenda Morton added 10 points for the builders.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to Erskine in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference action. Tip-off is 4 p.m. at College Hall.

Bush named to Daktronics all-region team

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College volleyball player Heidi Busch was named to the Daktronics Division II Volleyball All-Atlantic Region first team, it was announced Tuesday. By being named to the first team, Busch is eligible for consideration for All-America honors. The award is administered by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) and is voted upon by the sports information directors in the region. The Daktronics All-Region award is the second in seven days for Busch, who was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region first team last week.

Busch, a 5-11 junior from Fort Wayne, Ind., leads the nation in total kills with 701 and ranks third in the nation in kills per game with a 5.57 average. A 2003 AVCA All-America honorable mention, Busch was named to the All-Tournament Team at this year's Atlantic Regional in the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship. She was also named to the All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference first team for the third consecutive year. In addition, Busch became the first volleyball player in CVAC history to earn Player of the Week honors four times in a single season, including each of the final three weeks of the season. Busch reached double figures in kills in each of her 36 starts this season, including 34 kills against St. Andrews and 33 kills against Barton.

Mount Olive posted an overall record of 24-13 and finished second in the CVAC regular season standings for the third consecutive year with a 15-3 mark. Mount Olive received its first-ever bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship, earning the No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Regional.

Trojan women's soccer team receives acadenic honor

The Mount Olive College women's soccer program was recognized for academic excellence as Mount Olive was among the schools to earn the 2003-04 NSCAA/Adidas Women's Soccer College Team Academic Award, it was announced Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Mount Olive women's soccer compiled a team grade point average of 3.08 during the 2003-04 academic year. The award recognizes programs that compile a team GPA of 3.00 or above.
