EW teams fall to Cardinals

When Eastern Wayne's basketball teams begin Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play tonight against South Central, both the Warrior boys and girls coaches believe a tough non-conference schedule will have them prepared for their visitors from Winterville -- although both teams are 0-3.

"We could have scheduled differently," said Eastern Wayne boys coach marvin Bowman. "But that wouldn't have us ready for the likes of Kinston or Goldsboro."

On Monday, visiting Jacksonville won both contests. The Lady Cardinals edged the Lady Warriors 44-36, while the Cardinal boys muscled their way to a 63-50 win.

Eastern Wayne's girls played their guests close for most of the first half -- tying the score at six in the first quarter, then again at 12-12 halfway through the second. Jacksonville scored nine unanswered points in the final three minutes of play to give them a 21-14 lead at intermission.

The Lady Warriors cut the lead to four and five points several times -- and to one, 35-34, at 2:52 of the fourth quarter. That, however, was as close as they could get.

The Warrior girls outrebounded their opponent 31-26, only committed 10 team fouls and reduced their turnovers to 19. Eastern Wayne also had a more balanced scoring effort.

Sierra King and Natasha Wiley scored 14 points each for the Warriors, while Yasmine Washington, La Niece Sims and Kristen Elliott added four points each. Elliott also had a solid night on the boards.

"I can't fault our effort," said Holland. "We executed the plays, but we just need to shoot the ball better. We proved tonight that we can compete."

Jacksonville's boys caught their hosts a little rusty.

"We hadn't played in a week, and it showed," said Bowman. "Our timing was off."

Although Landon Downes scored the initial basket of the game, the first half was all Jacksonville. The Cardinals' athleticism and height gave them a 24-17 edge at intermission.

The Warriors picked up their intensity in the second half. Donald Rouse and Downes, along with Chris Campbell, whittled the lead down to five points several times in the third quarter. Jacksonville, however, was able to thwart a comeback each time.

Campbell played an outstanding two-way game. Not only was he his team's high scorer with 14 points, he was also a defensive stalwart under the boards. He also blocked several Cardinal shots.

Eastern Wayne will host South Central tonight.
