BLUEFIELD, WV -- Elton Coffield led four players in double figures with 19 points and every Trojan player scored as Mount Olive College defeated tournament host Bluefield State 98-80 in the consolation game of the Currence Classic Saturday at Bluefield. Coffield was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mount Olive (3-1) took a 50-34 lead at halftime and built the lead to as many as 28 points. The Trojans went to their bench most of the second half.

Chris Bartley scored 16 points, as did Melvin Creddle, who also dished out six assists. Victor Young added 12 points, four assists and four steals. Sharome Holloway pulled down 10 rebounds for the Trojans.

The win was the Mount Olive's second over Bluefield State in eight days. The Trojans defeated Bluefield State 100-56 last weekend at College Hall in the 39th Annual Pickle Classic.

Mount Olive makes a return trip to the state of West Virginia Wednesday as the Trojans take on Concord in non-conference action. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

West Virginia State 86, Mount Olive 84

BLUEFIELD, WV -- Mount Olive College rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit to tie the game in the final minute, but came up short as the Trojans fell to West Virginia State 86-84 in the first round of the Currence Classic at Bluefield, W. Va. The tournament is hosted by Bluefield State College.

Maurice Horton scored 23 of his 25 points in the second half, while Elton Coffield finished with 15 points, Melvin Creddle added 11 points and Moise Tchankeu recorded his first double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Mount Olive (2-1) trailed 41-31 at halftime and fell behind by 17 points midway through the second half before coming back to tie the game 83-83 with under a minute left. But West Virginia State (1-2) scored the tie-breaker and held on for the win.
