CLAYTON -- Helen Moore tallied a game-high 13 points as North Johnston opened its season Monday evening with a 43-29 victory against county rival West Johnston.

"We didn't play very well offensively or defensively," veteran Panthers coach David Bagwell said. "Our fullcourt press got us some turnovers and we got in transition to score some easy baskets early. But we did not play well in our halfcourt game."

Moore added seven rebounds, while Stephanie Jones contributed six points and six steals.

"She (Jones) did a good job on the defensive end, not just with the steals, but she was in the right place all the time," Bagwell said.

North Johnston entertains South Lenoir next Monday.

Greene Central

collects third victory

SNOW HILL -- Brianna Stanton pumped in a game-high 14 points and Teketia May chipped in 13 as unbeaten Greene Central knocked off Charles B. Aycock 46-35 on Monday evening.

The Rams improved to 3-0, while the Golden Falcons slipped to 0-3.

Aycock coach Gary Hales said his team got good looks at the basket all evening, but just couldn't finish. The Golden Falcons shot 11 for 49 from the floor and didn't fare much better with a 12 for 32 effort at the free throw line.

"I think our nerves get the better of us on the court and we have a hard time playing through the missed shots," Hales said. "They're learning a new system this year and it's taking time to get adjusted to it. If we can hit some shots, our confidence will go up.

"We're struggling to put the ball in the basket."

Keyatta Pettiford emerged Aycock's top scorer with 12 points. Lela Reid contributed 11. Erin Medford snagged a team-leading six rebounds to go with three points.

The Golden Falcons open their Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference schedule at county rival Goldsboro next Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m.

Greene Central entertains Wilson Fike on Wednesday.

WARSAW -- Sisters Pam and Corin Muldrow paced Southwest Onslow with 20 and 17 points, respectively, in a 54-35 victory against James Kenan at Harmon Gymnasium on Monday evening.

Pam collected 11 steals. Corin nearly recorded a triple-double after grabbing 14 rebounds and picking the Tigers' pockets for eight steals. Teammate Brittany Phillips added 10 points, nine rebounds and seven steals.

Celise Crawford paced the Tigers (0-1) with eight points.

HOLLY RIDGE -- Noelle Bryant led Dixon with 13 points while Leisa Meeting added 11 points, seven assists and eight steals in a 52-17 non-conference victory against Princeton on Monday evening.

Leslie Thompson had a team-leading five rebounds while scoring eight points and Deavon Wallace and Brittany Howard each snared four boards for the Bulldogs.

Stephanie Daughtry paced Princeton with six points.

picks up road win

ROCKY MOUNT -- Shelle Anderson scored a game-high 11 points as Wayne Christian dealt Faith Christian a 25-21 loss in non-conference action Monday evening.

Brittany Sullivan and Jennifer Price had four points apiece for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian (2-1) is the guest of Wilson Christian Academy this afternoon.

Middle schools

Norwayne 22, Spring Creek 20 -- Cynthia Burroughs emerged the Cobras' top scorer with eight points. Shanta'l Johnson and Brittany O'Banion collected six and four points, respectively. Tiffany Davis tallied a game-high 13 points for the Gators (0-2) and teammate Lisa Mozingo added seven. Norwayne (1-1) travels to Greenwood next Monday afternoon.

Greene County 25, St. Peter's-Greenville 19 -- Shonice Pettaway pumped in 10 points. Vantina Lee contributed nine points and seven rebounds. Allie Rawl scored five points for St. Peter's. Greene Central (2-1) is the guest of Lenoir-Greene Conference opponent Frink next Tuesday afternoon.
