Wilson Hunt ends CBA's run

WILSON -- When it came to defense, Charles B. Aycock gave out quite a few lessons this football season.

On Friday, the Golden Falcons took a lesson from Wilson Hunt as the Warriors blanked Aycock 20-0 in the second round of the Class 3-A (small-school) football playoffs.

The Warrior defense shut out Aycock for the first time all season and forced six Aycock turnovers -- five on interceptions of quarterback Wesley Whitley. The key was Hunt's ability to stop the Falcons' running attack, forcing long-yardage situations that saw Hunt lay back an extra defender to play the pass.

"When you can't get the run going and can't get them to commit an extra man to the box, then they can lay back and hunt the pass," said Charles B. Aycock coach Randy Pinkowski. "They gave us some pressure and we had a few errant throws, and a few dropped balls. You can't do that against good football teams. You have to make the plays, and the team that does usually wins."

After a scoreless first quarter, Whitley was picked off by Marcus Sauls at the Falcon 39 and returned it to the two-yard line. The ball was tipped by Lee Lee Pender to set up the interception. From there, Jamie McNamara carried it into the end zone from two yards out for the game's first score.

The Hunt offense struck in the third period as Jermaine Williams swept around the right end and scampered to a 42-yard touchdown to move out to a 14-0 lead, but the Falcons did not quit. The offense kept trying to find the key but never got untracked against the ball-hawking Warriors.

Aycock got a partial block of a punt by Spruce Lee to start a drive near midfield, but if fizzled as Sauls snared another interception by curling in inside the Aycock receiver at the 11-yard line. Sauls brought the ball all the way back for a touchdown, which was called back by a penalty. But the Warriors got the score back by driving from the Falcons 34 in six plays, with McNamara getting his second touchdown of the night from one yard out.

Sauls had three interceptions in the game for Hunt, which takes on cross-town rival Wilson Beddingfield in Friday's third round game at Warrior Stadium.

"That's just a whale of a football team right there," said Pinkowski. "We would have to come down here and play a perfect game and not make any mistakes to stay in the game. We didn't do it. I was pleased with my defense - their backs were against the wall all night because we couldn't get anything going offensively."

The Falcons end the season after nine wins, a second-place tie in the Eastern Carolina Conference and a playoff win for the first time in over 20 years. Aycock was the only Wayne County football team to advance to the second round of the playoffs. Pinkowski will say good bye to 20 seniors.

"The seniors --gosh Almighty," he said. "Guys like Turner Wood, Wesley, Shonte Barnes -- I'll coach a long time before I have another senior group like that. I'm thrilled with them. Look at the 20-year streaks this group has broken. For our kids to play at the level they are playing now -- I'm proud and couldn't be prouder."

The coach mentioned the value of the core of football coaches in Wayne County and their affect on and off the field.

"There's a lot of good football teams in Wayne county, and a lot of good coaches," he said. "I think our county is well blessed with good coaches and good kids and coaches that make an impact on their lives. I wish personally that coaches could be shown a little more respect in this day when kids need daddies so bad, and we are here for them 24-7, sometimes at the detriment of our own kids. Wayne County doesn't realize how fortunate it is to have the group of gentlemen coaching that it does."

Whitley led the Aycock rushing game with 56 yards on seven carries, and threw for 69 more yards, with Spruce Lee catching five passes for 49 yards. Defensively, Cortez Gilbert had 10 solo tackles and two assists, while John Hewitt had six solos and three assists, Keith Cobb had seven solos and one assist and Turner Wood had five solos and two assists.

"I couldn't be prouder or happier to be the coach of the C.B. Aycock Falcons," Pinkowski said. "It's been a great season and a great year. We drained every ounce of ability that they had out of them."
