PIKEVILLE -- Both Charles B. Aycock's girls and boys basketball teams made solid second-half runs at aggressive Greene Central squads.

The downfall for the home teams proved to be sluggish first halves and the visitors ability to answer their surges.

Keyed by Teddie Waters' 25 points and 10 rebounds, Greene Central's boys opened the season with a 65-50 victory. The Rams reversed a 13-3 Aycock run during the third and fourth quarters with an 8-0 push to pull away midway through the fourth quarter.

"We made a run and I thought we wanted it more than they did at that point," Aycock boys coach David West said. "But, most of the game we didn't communicate with each other too well. Our only inside play came on offensive rebounds. We've got a lot to work on there.

"The kids stayed in and didn't quit, but we got to that point and Kevin's (Hart) guys stepped it up."

Golden Falcon senior Brandon Hobbs dropped in 16 points to lead Aycock, including 14 in the second half.

In a girls game marred with numerous turnovers and fouls by both teams, the Falcons pulled close at 38-36 with just over one minute left on a Keyata Pettiford three-pointer. Aycock had a handful of opportunities to tie in the final minute, only to see Greene Central seal the game late at the free-throw line and claim a 43-36 win.

The two teams combined to shoot 71 times from the charity stripe on the game. The Rams made 46 percent on 19-of-41 shooting, while the Golden Falcons managed just 30 percent, making nine-of-30.

Pettiford paced Aycock, who shot 23 percent from the field, with 12 points.

"I'm very disappointed. We played hard, but we just didn't play smart," Falcon girls coach Gary Hales said. "They were much more physical than we were. It was a horrible shooting night. We missed a lot of transition baskets, and I think that got in our head."

Waters did most of his damage in the first half for the Ram boys as he pumped in 18 of his 25 before intermission -- scoring over half of Greene Central's output in a 33-19 halftime advantage.

"He's going to be our go-to guy this year. He's got good size and ball-handling skills," Greene Central coach Kevin Hart said. "He stepped up tonight, and I hope he will continue to do so."

The Golden Falcons, who had 10 untimely first-half turnovers, took better care of the ball on the perimeter in the second half and steadily starting cutting into the Ram lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Rob Phillips' driving lay-up trimmed it to 46-43 -- capping the 13-3 run.

Phillips and teammate Montrel Sims finished with 10 points each.

Greene Central center Charles Gamble, who had nine points and seven rebounds, helped Greene Central regain control with a pair of free-throws and a put-back.

Greene Central's girls jumped out to a 16-8 lead after the first quarter paced by six points each from Teketia May and Briana Stanton. Aycock, who had nine turnovers in the first six minutes, finished with 33 turnovers for the game, while the Rams turned it over 25 times.

May led all scorers with 19 points as Stanton added 10.

The Falcons started closing the gap late in the third. LaQuita Broadie's steal and basket made it 26-24 with two minutes left. Needing to continue the momentum, Aycock didn't score in the first 2:30 of the fourth quarter as the Rams pushed the lead back out to eight.

Both teams take to the road on Thursday as the Falcons travel to Wilson Beddingfield, while the Rams take on Ayden-Grifton in Littlefield.
