1984 Pickle Classic

MOUNT OLIVE -- LeMonte Johnson's steal and layup with 38 seconds put Mount Olive in the lead and the Trojans held on for a 75-72 win against Lenoir Community College to win the 1984 Pickle Classic.

The win gave Mount Olive its second Pickle Classic championship overall and its first in 16 years.

Mount Olive led in the first half, but fell behind in the second half until Johnson's heroics. Johnson was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. After Lenoir CC missed a shot and Johnson was fouled after getting the rebound. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Darwin Carr pulled down the offensive rebound for the Trojans and hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left to seal the victory for first-year head coach Al Warrick.

The key to the win was the Trojans' defense against Lenoir CC 6-foot-7 center Thomas Beatty, who erupted for 32 points and 15 rebounds against Mount Olive earlier in the season.

"We knew we had to stop Beatty," said Warrick. "If we had let him get in the game early, he and the rest of their great players could have dominated."

Warrick had a guard front Beatty throughout the game and the team played a sagging man-to-man defense to help when Beatty got the ball. Richard Moore and John Blackwell drew the defensive assignment on Beatty most of the game.

"It worked perfect," said Warrick. "Beatty got frustrated and he wasn't there for the big shots at the end of the game."

Livingstone drops Mount Olive women

in season opener

SALISBURY -- Livingstone broke open a four-point halftime lead with a 24-7 run to start the second half and held on to defeat Mount Olive 61-48 in a non-conference women's basketball contest Tuesday evening.

The game was the season opener for both teams.

Mount Olive (0-1) took its first lead of the game at 10-9 with 12:53 left in the first half on a jumper by Ladora Charles. The Trojans still led 14-13 when Livingstone (0-1) scored six unanswered points to take the lead for good. Shenetta Moye's field goal with 59 seconds pulled the Trojans within two points before Livingstone answered with a basket to take a 28-24 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Love Brown hit a pair of baskets for Livingstone and Sherree Gillespie's layup with 17:58 remaining gave Livingstone its first double-digit lead. The Lady Blue Bears then went on an 11-0 run to take its biggest lead at 52-31 with 10:02 left in the game.

Mount Olive never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way until Anita Rogers hit a basket at the buzzer for the final margin.

The Trojans shot 32.8 percent from the field (19-for-58) and hurt itself by shooting 30.0 percent from the line on 9-for-30 shooting. Mount Olive outrebounded Livingstone 50-39, but committed 34 turnovers.

Teneal Boone recorded a double-double for the Trojans with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Melanie Cobb and Latoria Harvey pulled down seven rebounds apiece.

Brown led Livingstone with 15 points, while Gillespie recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jennifer Plymouth added 10 points for the Lady Blue Bears.

Mount Olive is off until Nov. 29 when the Trojans travel to Newport News, Va., to take on Newport News Apprentice.
