LELAND -- If one looked at the score of the opening round Class 1-A (small school) N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff game between Spring Creek and North Brunswick, the thought might prevail that Scorpions coach Garry Bishop was a happy man.
That was not the case.
Owen Spencer caught touchdown passes of 46 and 30 yards from quarterback Brandon Savoca and hauled in a 75-yard scoring pass from Tyrone Robbins on a halfback option to lead North Brunswick to a 36-0 win over Spring Creek on Friday.
The win propels the Scorpions (10-1) into the second round at home next Friday against either Farmville Central or Heide Trask. That game was postponed Friday due to the weather.
The Gators concluded the season at 1-11 and are now 0-4 overall in playoff games.
"I'm happy with the win, but there were too many penalties, too many miscommunications and too many fumbles," Bishop said. "If it doesn't improve next week it will be our last game. Everything from here has to be up field and positive."
North Brunswick led 15-0 at halftime thanks to the 46-yard hookup from Savoca and a 1-yard run by Josh McMillian. But the Scorpions squelched one drive at the Gators' 29 with a fumble, and killed another drive at the Spring Creek 41 with another drop.
But the North Brunswick defense kept the Gators at bay. Spring Creek had 24 yards at halftime, and never got into Scorpions territory. McMillian recovered a fumble, Keyon Goodman snared an interception, Goodman fell on another Gators fumble, and Deron Robbins recovered a third.
The second half was better on both sides of the ball. Spencer caught a 75-yard pass from Robbins, and caught a 30-yard pass from Savoca. Jon Kenney ended the scoring with a three-yard run.
The Scorpions' defense did an even better job, holding the Gators to minus yardage. Spring Creek finished the game with a total of five yards rushing, and one yard passing.
