MOC soccer teams among national stat leaders

MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive College women's soccer team is tied for first in the nation in total goals, Melanie Cobb ranks among the top five women's soccer players in the nation in goals and points per game and Cory Worrell continues to rank among the top 10 men's soccer players in scoring as Mount Olive is ranked in several team and individual categories in this week's NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Soccer Statistics Reports.

Cobb, who was named Most Valuable Player of the 2004 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Soccer, ranks fourth in the nation with a school-record 28 goals and a 1.47 per game average. She also ranks fifth in the nation with 3.32 points per game (combined goals and assists).

Gina Dos Santos, who scored two goals in the CVAC Tournament championship game, ranks No. 28 in the nation with 20 goals and an average of 0.87 goals per game. Heidi Philip ranks sixth in the nation in assists with 16 assists and 0.70 per game average. Kate Painter moved into a tie at No. 18 with 11 assists and a 0.58 average per game. Goalkeeper Heather Ressler's 0.726 goals against average is the 22nd-lowest in the nation.

In the team statistics, Mount Olive is tied with Metro State (Colo.) for first in the nation in total goals with 95 and ranks second in goals per game with a 4.13 average. The Trojans also rank 18th in scoring defense with a 0.694 goals against average. Mount Olive finished the season with 11 shutouts in 23 matches for the 26th-best shutout percentage. Mount Olive joins Metro State as the only 20-game winners in Division II and the Trojans' .870 winning percentage (20-3-0) is the eighth-highest in the nation.

Coincidentally, it was Metro State's record that Mount Olive broke this season for the greatest one-year improvement in NCAA II women's soccer history. The Trojans improved by 141/2 games over last year's 3-15-0 mark, breaking the previous record improvement of 111/2 games.

On the men's side, Worrell, the former standout player for Eastern Wayne High School who was named 2004 CVAC Men's Soccer Player of the Year, is tied for 10th in the nation with 23 goals in 22 matches for a 1.05 goals per game average. His 2.27 points per game average is the 16th-highest in the nation. Warren Atkins, who led the nation in assists per game, ranks fifth with 18 and a 0.84 average per game. Goalkeeper Chris Roush, who was named Most Valuable Player of the 2004 CVAC Men's Soccer Tournament, moves up two spots to No. 27 with a 0.902 goals against average.

In the team stats, Mount Olive has the eighth-highest scoring offense with 68 goals in 22 matches for an average of 3.09 goals per game.

Both the Mount Olive men's and women's soccer teams finished their seasons by capturing CVAC Soccer Championships this past weekend, marking the first time since 1996 the same school won the CVAC Men's and Women's soccer championships.
