Cross country championship Ñ EW's Collins finishes second, team takes fifth

CLEMMONS-- In the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association boy's state championship, Asheville T. C. Roberson had four runners among the top 18 in team scoring to take the title on Saturday at Tanglewood Park with 75 points.
East Chapel Hill finished second with 104, Weddington was third, one point out of second. Eastern Wayne, missing one of its key runners, finished fifth in the team scoring with 192 points.
Chris Belfiore of Jacksonville was the individual 3-A men's champ in a time of 16:19.93, with Will Collins of Eastern Wayne taking second with a 16:37. Collins took first in the eastern regionals with Belfiore finishing second.
"They are very comparable runners. They are always neck-and-neck," Warrior cross country coach Vince Beasley said.
Charlotte Providence made it two consecutive women's cross country championships and Asheville T.C. Roberson swept a pair of 3-A crowns in action on Saturday at Tanglewood Park.
Brittany Ham (Eastern Wayne) and Kylie Justo (Charles B. Aycock) participated as individuals in the women's meet with Ham taking 81st overall and Justo finishing 99th.
A report on the 1-A and 2-A state championship meet will be in Monday's edition.
