Aycock posts huge numbers at Washington

WASHINGTON -- Charles B. Aycock quarterback Wesley Whitley threw for a season-high 302 yards with three touchdowns to three different receivers as the Golden Falcons closed the season with a 52-35 win at Washington.

The point total (52) and total offensive yardage (491) are all record numbers during Aycock coach Randy Pinkowski's six-year tenure in Pikeville. Whitley threw for 340 yards on the same field as a sophomore.

Aycock (8-3 overall) concluded the season at 6-2 against Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foes and finished in a three-way tie for second place with Kinston and Southern Wayne. After applying tiebreaker rules, the Vikings get the second seed, while the Falcons get the third and the Saints enter as the fourth seed.

Facing a Washington defense content on putting eight-or-nine-plus players near the line of scrimmage for most of the game, Whitley completed 14-of-22 passes with one interception. He tossed touchdown passes to Shonte Barnes, Spruce Lee and Thomas Artis before the end of the third quarter as the Falcons held a huge, 45-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.

"They dedicated to stopping the run, and we had anticipated that," Pinkowski said. "We decided to stand in and throw it until they came out of it and they never did. We were able to complete those plays and it turned into a lot of yardage and a lot of points.

"Give Wesley a ton of credit. He really made some great reads and stood in the pocket and delivered the football."

Artis led four receivers with at least 40 yards with a 106-yard performance on six catches.

Aycock running back Shonte Barnes capped off a stout regular season with 98 yards on 19 carries with two rushing touchdowns to go with a 37-yard scoring reception. Barnes now has 16 rushing touchdowns on the year.

With mostly Falcon substitutes in the game, Washington posted 21 fourth-quarter points -- all three scores coming on touchdown passes from Mat Tanner, who finished with 228 yards through the air. Pam Pack receiver Calvin Daniels had seven catches for 148 yards with three touchdowns.

The two teams combined for 879 yards of total offense and ran a whopping, 133 total offensive plays.

On top of a five-yard rushing score in the third quarter, Turner Wood added an 18-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
