FRANKLINTON -- Rosewood's Joey Churchwell tallied his third hat trick (three goals) of the season as the Eagles scored four times in the second half to defeat Franklinton 4-1 in the first round of the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Churchwell, a senior, now has a team-high 19 goals as Rosewood moved into the second round for the second-straight year. Fellow upper-classmen Brandon Hietpas dished out two assists to Churchwell and scored the Eagles' third goal on a penalty kick in the 28th minute of the second half.

Hietpas now has a team-leading 14 assists to go with nine goals.

Senior Matt Howell assisted on Churchwell's final goal as the Eagles (12-10-1) did all of their scoring within a 20-minute stretch of the second half.

"We started a little slow and sluggish and did a lot of watching in the first half," Rosewood coach Daniel Mitchell said. "We were fortunate to only be down 1-0 at halftime. We tightened up defensively and started working harder.

"We got that first goal, and it gave us something to be excited about."

Defensively, Tyler Daniels, Kenton Lowe and Kyle Bunn paced the Rosewood effort, while goalie Antell Richards provided eight saves. Mitchell made a key defensive switch in the second half, moving Bunn up from sweeper to stopper to help contain Franklinton midfielder Jan Fischer.

Mitchell praised the effort of his seniors in the win.

"They understand we've been there before. We've had tight games in the playoffs in the past, and they understand how to win those games now hopefully," Mitchell added.

Rosewood, the third seed from the Carolina/Super Six Conference, hosts Pamlico in the second round on Saturday.

The Hurricanes (11-10) defeated Camden 2-1 on the road on Saturday and are the fourth seed from the Coastal Plains Conference.
