Prep volleyball -- WCDS in 1-A playoffs

Wayne Country Day, despite losing several starters off last year's team, earned an at-large bid to the 2004 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A volleyball playoffs.

The Chargers drew the No. 13 seed and play a first-round match today at Shannon Forest (S.C.) School. Game time is 6 p.m.

Defending state champion Durham Cresset Christian (15-3) is the top seed. Albemarle, a two-time NCISAA finalist in this decade, is the No. 2 seed and 19-2 overall. Village Christian earned the No. 4 seed after posting a 16-win season.

Wayne Country Day is making its fifth consecutive postseason appearance and enters the 16-team field as the 14th seed. The Chargers are 0-4 in first-round contests, including an 0-2 worksheet against higher-seeded opponents. They are one of four teams in the tournament with a losing record.

Asheville Christian claimed three consecutive NCISAA titles from 2000-02.

Albemarle claimed runner-up honors in 2000 and 2003. Terra Ceia finished the 2001 runner-up, while Halifax Academy emerged the 2002 runner-up.
