Kinston outlasts Goldsboro in schools' football meeting

With Kinston's 20-14 victory at Goldsboro Friday night, the historic football rivalry between the two schools ended -- for now, at least.

The Vikings have opted to schedule other competitors when Goldsboro moved to the 2-A ranks next season.

"It was their decision," said Golds-boro coach Maurice Jackson. "I just hated to see this happen."

Goldsboro, 1-6 in conference play, and 1-9 overall, came very closeto giving their guests something to remember them by until they meet again.

The Cougars won the battle of the statistics, outrushing their opponent 276-157, and outpassing Kinston 65-49 for 341 total yards. Kinston ended the night with 206 total yards.

Unfortunately, Goldsboro threw three interceptions, fumbled once, had a kick blocked, and were penalized 11 times for 115 yards.

"Same thing as last week," said Jackson. "Too many giveaways."

Cougar quarterback Treme Boone opened the game with a 10-yard toss over the middle to Jerry Gills that paced an 11-play drive down to the Kinston 35, where a C.J. Sherrod interception halted the drive.

Meanwhile, the Cougar defense was shutting Kinston down in the first quarter. Aaron Phifer had a sack, Tyshon Lofton knocked down a pass and Jeremy Sessions recovered a funble for the Cougars.

Boone did not miss on his second chance to score. Behind great downfield blocking, the freshman romped 75 yards on a left-side sweep, scoring for an early 6-0 lead.

Kinston went ahead 7-6, scoring as the first half was ending. Aided by a blocked punt, quarterback Jamar Carraway took advantage of a short field and hit Victor Speller with a nine-yard pass to score with 45 second left before halftime. Place-kicker Davin Arnold's extra point put the Vikings in the lead to stay.

A pair of Teyon Marshall touchdowns in the third quarter made it 20-6.

Boone teamed up with Phifer to grind out their final touchdown. Playing his final game, Phifer scored on a right-sidesweep from three yards out to close the gap. Boone ran in a two-point conversion on a keeper to get the score to 20-14 with just over six minutes to play.

With four minutes left, Boone drove from his 22 to the Kinston 30. But the nine-play drive was stopped by a Quentin Bowen interception.

Coach Stephen Walter picked up his second win since taking over the coaching reins from Lonnie Baker.

"I didn't think we came out tonight and played as well as we should have," he said. "We may have taken Goldsboro too lightly. I'm just glad to get out of here with a win."

Kinston, 5-1 in conference and 7-2 overall, will square off against West Craven Friday night in a battle for first place in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Goldsboro will conclude their season Friday, traveling to Dudley to meet Southern Wayne.
