North Lenoi wins third EPC tournament

PINETOPS -- North Lenoir successfully defended its Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference volleyball tournament title with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-11 victory against archrival South Lenoir at SouthWest Edgecombe on Thursday afternoon.

The Hawks (22-1) faced the Blue Devils for the fourth consecutive year in tournament play and claimed their third crown. South Lenoir emerged the tournament champion in 2002.

Brittany Sanders provided 10 kills and was perfect on 12 of 12 serving. Outside hitters Rachel Cromer and Leslie Oliver each collected 10 kills, while Cromer also recorded three blocks.

Middle hitter Randi Moulton contributed six blocks and finished 20 of 20 at the service line.

Senior Chanee Lynch dished out 40 assists.

The Blue Devils, who clinched the league's No. 2 berth for the playoffs, couldn't close out the second set with a 22-20 lead.

Top-seeded North Lenoir eliminated the host Cougars 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 in the semifinals. The Hawks rallied from a five-point deficit in the opening set and fought off a late SouthWest charge in the final set.

Moulton turned in a 15-kill performance, while Oliver added nine kills and two blocks. Sanders contributed 11 kills and finished 18 of 18 serving.

Lynch handed out 38 assists.

North Lenoir entertains South Granville next Tuesday in the opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs. Game time is 7 p.m. at Wooten Gymnasium.

Rosewood falls

to Farmville Central

FARMVILLE -- Denied the Carolina 1-A Conference volleyball tournament title each of the past three seasons, Farmville Central finally snagged the prize Thursday evening.

Jessica Joyner collected seven blocks as the Jaguars turned back third-seeded Rosewood 25-20, 16-25, 28-26, 25-20 in the championship match. The Jaguars (20-2) entertain the No. 3 representative from the Coastal Plains Conference.

The Eagles (17-6) visit the Coastal Conference runner-up.

Senior middle hitter Jessica Hill paced Rosewood with 17 kills, seven blocks, five digs and five assists. Clare Narron dished out a season-high 17 assists to go along with seven digs, four service aces and four kills.

Abigail Barrow handed out 11 assists.

Morgan Wheeler complemented Hill's effort with 14 kills, three blocks and three digs. Katy Morris, Kelli Gurley, Kasey Grey and Hannah Aycock also contributed in the match.

Golden Falcons

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock seized the final two sets in a 25-12, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21 victory against Washington in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

The Golden Falcons (17-3, 14-2 ECC) secured the league's No. 2 berth for next week's N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs. They begin first-round play Tuesday at Wilson Beddingfield. Match time is 6 p.m.

"It wasn't pretty, but we got it done," Aycock coach Davis Harris said.

Lindsey Newman paced Aycock with 11 kills, while Karlie West served 11 aces.

Harris said the team received "strong floor play from Ashley Morris."

Chargers pick

win vs. Goldsboro

Wayne Country Day's Amanda Knutson had three aces, three kills and four digs as the Chargers battled past Goldsboro 21-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-15, 15-12 on Wednesday afternoon.

Amanda Benton posted 10 kills for Wayne Country Day, while Laura Ziemer added two aces, four kills and two digs.

The Chargers (10-12) begin play in the season-ending Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference tournament this afternoon.

takes ECC crown

PIKEVILLE -- Lee Ann Sager and Shelly Lancaster recorded three kills apiece as C.B. Aycock emerged the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champions with a 25-17, 25-14 decision against Washington.

Kaitlyn Stafford served four aces.

The Golden Falcons finished 13-1 in the ECC and 16-2 overall.
