Three area golfers advance to state tourney

Three local golfers will head to Southern Pines next week to take part in the N.C. High School Athletic Association's Class 1-A/2-A/3-A state golf tournament after qualifying at the eastern regional tournament Monday at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.
Eastern Wayne's Brittney Taylor shot an 83 to finish tied for third place, qualifying for one of 17 spots in the state tournament field. The tournament will be held at Longleaf in Southern Pines Oct. 25-26.

Clayton's Sharlene Gale won regional medalist honors, scorching the Goldsboro layout for a 75, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Amy Otteson of Wilson Fike.
Fike's Harper Pridgen came in right behind Taylor with an 84, tying the Golden Demons with Clayton at 166 for the regional team title.
To break the tie, the third-place golfers from each team were compared, and Fike's Austin Robbins shot an 89 to Melissa Baker's 91 for Clayton.
Charles B. Aycock finished third at 166, with Kelli Forbis (90) and Brooke Newell (92) taking qualifying spots. Eastern Wayne was fourth at 185, but Ashley Smith shot a 102 to miss a qualifying spot.
Other local teams to see action included Spring Creek, where Paula Webber (104) and Jenni Johnson (109) combined for a 12th-place finish. Hannah Lane could not finish the course. Southern Wayne was 14th, with Jordan Hill shooting a 109 and Lynn Grantham posting a 112.
North Johnston's Julie Dorman withdrew from the tournament.
