Mount Olive women get another shutout soccer victory
MONTGOMERY, West Virginia -- Gina Dos Santos and Lauren Slattum scored two goals apiece, while Emily Escolas and Heidi Philip each tallied a goal and two assists to lead Mount Olive College's women's soccer team to a 7-0 victory over West Virginia Tech Sunday at Montgomery.
Mount Olive (13-3-0) got on the scoreboard in the 15th minute when Elise Bennett scored her first collegiate goal. Philip, who assisted on Bennett's goal, scored a goal of her own four minutes later to make the score 2-0.
Dos Santos extended the lead to 4-0 at the 34:00 mark with a pair of goals in a span of two minutes, both on assists by Escolas. Dos Santos, who has scored at least one goal in each of her last five matches, now has 12 goals on the season, the second-highest goal scoring total in Mount Olive women's soccer history.
Mount Olive went into halftime with a 5-0 lead after Slattum scored the first of her two goals in the 38th minute. Philip, who ranks second in the nation in assists per game, picked up her 17th assist of the year on the play. Slattum added another goal five minutes into the second half on an assist by Dos Santos. Escolas closed out the scoring with her 11th goal of the season, the third-highest goal scoring total in Trojan women's soccer history. Jessica Steffne had the assist on the final goal.
The shutout was the eighth of the season for goalkeeper Heather Ressler and the Trojans. Mount Olive outshot West Virginia Tech 21-2. West Virginia Tech (0-12-0) dressed only 11 players for the match.
After posting a 2-1 record on its Fall Break road trip, Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Meredith in non-conference action. Match time is 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.
Insley wins meet for Trojan harriers
FAYETTEVILLE -- Tim Insley placed first out of 14 runners to lead Mount Olive College to a win over Methodist and Fayetteville State at the Methodist College Triangular Cross Country Meet Thursday at Fayetteville. Insley finished the 8K course in a time of 26:25, almost 90 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Christof Franzsen finished fourth (30:58) for Mount Olive, followed by Kris Exum in fifth (34:41), Fernando Crisosto in seventh (35:01) and Alan Fricks in ninth (38:06). The Trojans finished with 26 points in the meet, followed by Methodist with 29. Fayetteville State did not have enough runners to qualify for the team points standings.
On the women's side, Becky Garrod finished second out of 10 runners with a time of 27:38. Charlene Spadaccini finished third (29:17) and Nicky Ross placed fifth (37:37).
