MISENHEIMER -- Matt Harris scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute and goalkeeper David Sheridan made a diving save on Warren Atkins' shot in the final minutes as Pfeiffer defeated Mount Olive 1-0 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's soccer Saturday.
Mount Olive (11-3-2 overall, 7-1-0 CVAC) hurt itself early with turnovers, including a turnover in its own end to set up Pfeiffer's goal. Harris stole a pass on the left side and took the ball all the way in for the goal to give Pfeiffer (4-8-0, 4-3-0) the lead.
Mount Olive attacked early in the second half, earning a corner kick in the first minute. The Trojans had six of their of seven corner kicks in the second half. Mount Olive appeared to tie the match in the 72nd minute when Reid Clewis headed the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was waved off on an offsides call. Conference scoring leader Cory Worrell fired a shot from 20 yards out in the 75th minute, but Sheridan deflected the ball over the crossbar to keep the Trojans scoreless.
The Trojans nearly tied the match at the 88:25 mark when Atkins struck the ball from the top of the box, but Sheridan dove to his left to stop the shot.
Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Newberry, S.C., to face Newberry in a non-conference match-up.

fall on road
CHARLESTON, W.V. - Mount Olive took an early two-goal lead, but Charleston (W.V.) came back with three second-half goals, including two in the final 10 minutes to defeat the Trojans 3-2 in non-conference women's soccer Saturday at Charleston. The loss snaps the Trojans' four-match winning streak.
Mount Olive (12-3-0) got on the scoreboard in the fourth minute as Emily Escolas scored on an assist by April Jacobs. The goal was the Escolas's ninth of the year and seventh in her last seven games.
Gina Dos Santos added a goal in the 20th minute on an assist by Escolas as the Trojans took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Charleston (5-11-0) took advantage of a one-player advantage after a Trojan player received a red card. Charleston got on the scoreboard in the 70th minute, tied the match in the 82nd minute and scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute.
Mount Olive concludes its road trip Sunday as the Trojans take on West Virginia Tech. Match time is 1 p.m. at Charleston.
MOC volleyball
1-3 at tournament
BANNER ELK -- Mount Olive College's volleyball team finished the "Magic on the Mountain" tournament at Lees-McRae College this weekend with a 1-3 mark.
The Trojans' only win came Saturday morning against Kutztown College (Pa.) as Heidi Busch had 29 kills in a 30-26, 28-30, 36-34, 30-28 victory. Sarah Christie had 60 assists against Kutztown, while Colby Mangum added 19 kills and seven blocks.
Also on Saturday, Mount Olive (18-10) fell to Millersville University (Pa.) 30-24, 24-230, 30-21, 30-14. Busch provided 20 kills as teammate Anna Luft added 12 kills. Christie dished out 43 assists.
In Friday's action, the Trojans lost to Edinboro University (Pa.) and California University (Pa.) -- both in four sets.
Busch had a combined 58 kills and 12 blocks on Friday, while Colby Mangum posted 16 blocks for the day. Christie notched a combined 87 assists during first-day action.
