LITTLEFIELD -- An early scoring blitz and a stingy Ayden-Grifton defense spelled a long night for the Princeton Bulldogs Friday night as the Chargers polished off Princeton 42-6 in a Carolina 1-A Conference game.
Jecol Edwards had 98 yards on four carries and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Chargers, who used 13 different players to run the ball for 250 yards.
The victory left Ayden-Grifton at the top of the league at 4-0 with two games left and is 5-3 overall.
Princeton sank to 0-4 in league play and 1-6 overall.
Edwards began his night with a 57-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.
A 39-yard punt return by Edwards set up the next Ayden-Grifton score -- a one-yard barge into the endzone by Matt Tripp to make it 14-0.
Less than four minutes later on fourth-and-six, Edwards again shuffled his way in for another score, this time a 16-yard scamper that pushed the lead to 21-0.
Tripp added another score just before the end of the opening quarter. A 46-yard touchdown run by Daniel Greene pushed the lead to 35-0 at the half.
Princeton's Johnny Phillips prevented the shutout with a one-yard touchdown run with under 90 seconds to play. The Bulldogs were limited to just 103 yards of offense.
Ayden-Grifton will now take a week off before playing its final two games of the regular season.
The Chargers can clinch the regular season conference title outright with wins over North Johnston and Farmville Central.
Princeton will host County rival North Johnston on Friday.
